New DLC - The Viking Sagas

Thing is Savars were influenced by the Cataphracts from my understanding. Very similar.

Savaran were cataphracts. The term cataphract means an armored cavalryman with armored horse.

Yes, so would make sense that the Balkan versions are called Cataphracts, the Persian/Islamic ones called Savar and both replace Knight-Line.. just Cataphract and elite Cataphract, Savar and elite Savar.

Will there be any more balance change before DLC?

Why is every one of your responses super long-winded? Can you try to be concise for once?

“Why not?” as Erling said. I enjoy explaining things properly.

This is new too, according to the wheel shape, which is present on the Trade Workshop and the Siege Workshop of the new architecture set.

The armour stands also may be new, they seems to be out-of-bound of the blacksmith sprite shape.

And this winter leafless tree variant, not sure if new but may be a new addition.

Actually the problem with the War Wagon is there is 0 historical basis for it. It’s based on a movie with no relation to the middle ages or to Koreans.

And the in-game design is based on a Chinese (not Korean) wagon that also doesn’t belong in the middle ages:

And that wasn’t the current devs.
The old devs’ excuse is they had little time (since Microsoft asked for Koreans last second) and that the wagon is supposed to represent Hwachas. But with the rocket card in the game now, that’s pointless. If the current devs want to keep the stats, they should turn the unit into an actual horse archer.

As far as I know, it’s the only one that’s a fictional unit.

To the point where I feel sorry for Koreans.

I wonder if it might be better to give UU the evolved form of “Rocket Cart.”

I wonder what gimmicky mechanics Jomsviking and Jarl would have. I assume Jomsviking would have 2 different mode of attack like Fire Archer, auto switch to torch attack against buildings and ships. And Jarl will probably have pass through ability like Chakram.

I’d say the woad raider is pretty fictional as well. And they’re not the only UUs that don’t fit the time period or the civ they’re assigned to (Organ Guns and Gbetos are two other examples, and Warrior Priest and Composite Bowman are pretty bad as well).

I wouldn’t say there’s 0 historical references for it. Koreans used horse-drawn wagons or carts to carry rockets (shinkichon) and guns, which helped make them more mobile and gave soldiers better cover.

Simply turning the skin to a mounted archer won’t be accurate. A warrior riding a horse and shooting arrows wouldn’t move that slowly.

Just changing the armor class and the projectile type would make the War Wagon much more accurate. After that maybe a reskin or even a new name.

If you search for “Liao Dao” on Google, you’ll notice that almost all the results are related either to this AoE2 unit or to a modern replica sword with the same name. That pretty much says it all.

It is one of the Birch variations.

Isn’t being a Throwing-Axeman-but-on-horse already unique enough?

that’s a mameluke

I can see why they are adding these dumb gimmicks to new units, because they have run out of ideas that fit the spirit of the game. But they are forcing new civ additions that don’t fit, instead of realising that the game doesn’t have design space for new civs.

The obvious development from this stage is abilities, basically the DOTA direction. However, rightfully so, the devs fear the community backlash.

Thus saying, we do already have this, in a minor form. Monks are the first culpits, they can heal, convert, and carry. Other units can switch modes, and many more

Mameluke has a bonus against cavalry, this one would have bonus against infantry.

There are others:

Celt Woad Raider is fictional. Woad does not stuck to skin.

Visually the Saracen Mameluke is fully fictional.

The Khitan Liao Dao is fictional.

Visually the Wei Tiger Cavalry is fictional.

The Dravidian Therisadai is fictional.
