Yeah I mean its not bad, I think the main issues are just the Varangians civ name, and that people would have preferred something else at this time.
Beautiful.

Longboats were often pulled onto land to get from one river to another.
but is this just eye candy or something we can play with?
We won’t know until they announce more. It’s more than likely eye candy or a single player only feature.
This looks like out of lord of the rings, first impression. With the big tree, and (what I assume would be) phantasy castles. Really unsure what to think:S
the saxons in the german translation are called Anglo-Saxons…
ok, looks decent. A dlc from another continent would have been better but can’t complain if there is a new architecture set. And the Harald Hardraada mega-campaign sounds amazing!
Danes looks too much focused on XI century and before, but okey, can work. Saxons too and might aswell work as a Teutons and Brtitons split to some extent. Not a big fan of Varangians. A civ out of the Roman emperor mercenary guard?
I guess I agree…not because of Persians Architecture.
I like the new architecture. the inner ilumination is like a warming bonfire.
Vikings civ 1: wheelbarrow free
Vikings civ 2 : hand cart free
Vikings civ 3 : both takes zero res but full time
OG vikings : whelbarow, handcart 50% cheap. 50% faster

Three Realms. One Viking Warlord. Your Adventure.
Unleash the fury of the North like never before with the latest expansion for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, The Viking Sagas. Set sail to embark on daring adventures and ruthless raids in an epic three-part campaign. Command the Danes, Saxons, and Varangians, each with unique units, technologies, and tactical strengths to open new strategies in campaign or multiplayer.
3 New Civilizations Forged by Conquest and War
Danes - Pressure opponents early with swift longships to strike without warning. The unique Danish unit, the Jomsviking, is ideal for these raids as a nimble and hardy infantryman that hurls flaming torches to devastate enemy buildings and ships.
Saxons - Construct mighty fortified towns to lock down territory and stand firm against relentless invasions. The Saxon unique unit is the Hearth Troop, a heavy infantryman that opens fights with a ranged javelin before closing in for intense melee combat.
Varangians - Fearlessly master waterways, ride down your foes, and leverage mercenary-style flexibility. The Jarl, the Varangian unique unit, is a fearsome axe-hurling cavalryman whose attacks tear through enemy infantry.
Leverage the six unique units across these new civilizations, including 3 shared units:
•Varangian Guards — deadly shock infantry who generate gold while fighting and excel at raiding and melee combat.
•Mounted Crossbowmen — hard-hitting but slow-firing ranged cavalry who strike fear into infantry armies.
•Longships — swift warships that combine potency and versatility.
3 New Campaigns Tracing an Exile’s Rise to Legend
Experience the epic saga of Harald Hardrada across three interconnected campaigns — from his cunning exploits across the Mediterranean, his brutal raids along the Danish coast, to his daring invasion of England. Earn renown through the skalds’ tales and fight your way from Scandinavia to the Kyivan Rus and the Byzantine Empire, before staking everything on England’s shores!
The Exiled Prince (Vikings & Varangians)— Cast out from Norway, Harald must seek wealth and prestige in foreign lands. But his fierce ambition to reclaim his crown is tested under the shadow of the increasingly despotic Empress Zoe.
The Hard Ruler (Danes & Vikings)— With immense wealth at his command, Harald wages a bitter war for the thrones of Denmark and Norway even if it demands a hard-handed rule. But in his pursuit of control, he risks losing the loyalty of his people and becoming the very tyrant he fights to overcome.
The Last Viking (Saxons & Vikings) — As omens set the heavens ablaze, Harald fixes his gaze toward England’s throne. Can he forge the empire of his dreams, or will his ambition falter before he rises to become the greatest Viking of them all?
Honestly, instead of the Danes, it should be something else because the Danes fall under the Viking umbrella. So, why bother add a civ called “Danes” when we got Vikings? Doesn’t make sense, unless it could be representing a certain timeframe of the Danes like what the campaign-only civ of the same name from AoE4 does.
They don’t follow any logic anymore.
They just care about short term profit. The game will lose its identity long term.
Yes, seems so. How are Saxons not teutonic? How are Danes not viking?
I’ve written some time ago that a civ now is just whatever the devs want to be playable, and it seems like they doubled down on this definition…
I’'m dissapointed not to see a shield wall unit here.
Norse expansion without that feels just wrong, sorry.
Also big missed chance to do somthing to fix the skirmisher issue. Shieldman as regional unit for most european civs would have made so many problems vanish, for these civs, for the gameplay in total. Whilst actually adding something historically accurate to oppose the anachronistic skirmishers.
The three shared regional units I assume are the replacements for the militia line, cav archer line and galleys?
Will they rename Goths special unit and will they rename Vikings to Norse?
