New DLC - The Viking Sagas

I’d be much more appreciative if I had a choice. As is they are probably going to change a whole lot of existing civs (I expect major changes to vikigns and byzantines) and probably a few existing campaigns.

I just want to play the game I like, but every update is must install, with no rollback.

I made a proposal that direction some time ago.
Didn’t catch much positive feedback tbh. People just wanted to get stuff for free.

Which I don’t think you get far with in the current economy tbh.

Usually if you want something from others you have to pay for it. I would do that, but as long as nobody else is willing to pay for it… I don’t think this will happen.

Rollback would always be a nice option for those who want it.

For my part I’d be quite happy to see the Byzantines get Varangian guards, their milita line has always be ignored really so more options is nice to me. After thirty years I do appreciate some changes here and there to existing factions.

All in all it’s Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

I have a feeling that most of the controversial design decisions are being done because there’s just no way to represent the region without a “Vikings split” accusation, so they are just going try to compromise between minimal changes and enough additions to get enough eyeballs to keep the bigwigs happy.

exactly. I am not opposed to other people getting new toys to play with. For all I care they can replace Teutons with Jedi and the Burgundians with Atlantis.

I am just categorically opposed to these changes being forced on everyone. I think the devs are bad people for doing that. it’s highly immoral. (and they agree with this, because they did allow rollback on aoe2HD)

I think it’s more a question that the current engine isn’t designed for that. At least how I understand it.

And it would require a costly workaround to find a solution without interfering with those who want other patches.

But maybe I am wrong with that impression, It’s only what I read and interpreted.

Though such changes can be made in the genie editor as data mods. They could create official data mods perhaps representing the various patches, as the game was when released etc.

The fact that Harald is hogging all three campaigns like the greedy pig he is means that we won’t get an Alfred the Great campaign for the Saxons. Oh well…

i’m not sure how there could be an engine limitation for that.

Chronicles, ROR and mods already allow playing with different datasets in lobbies. all they need to do is provide official data sets for previous (balance) patches

they already allowed version rollback for tournaments when the had major fuckups on patch rollouts.

so at this point them NOT allowing rollbacks is just spite.

Sounds nice at first. But the patches would then still required to be downloaded and could mess with settings and mods and whatelse.
I am looking for a solution to play with my extremely casual friends again.

But ok, I also am not in a way if that’s unachievable and there are enough others that would agree on this idea.

It is hint to Yggdrasil. It is becoming too much fantasy related - I love Norse Mythology / Asatru - yet I am unsure of this development of the game.

Vikings in my opinion should be reworked to Norse - and I honestly think the Norse campaign should be about Sigurðr Jórsalafari ; The Norwegian Crusade of 1107 Norwegian Crusade - Wikipedia

It’s just a big tree they have adorned, doesn’t seem that crazy to me. Big trees exist

Yes of course but to me it looks like a wonder, which idk. I find that questionable

No, it’s based on Donar’s Oak, a sacred Tree that Germanic pagans used as gathering places to worship their gods.

Yeah think it will be a campaign object.

Doesn’t make sense at all for a wonder, given what the story is. That would be cynical (no spoilers)

Yes, Donar, the thunder deity, continental Germanic pagan version of Tor.

we already have a hill with waterfalls as a wonder, why not a big tree.

nothing is real
everything is stupid
make it make sense

Because if the devs did this they clearly ask for a review bomb and outcry 7x the size of 3K…

Maybe some believe they would bring something like this, but idk… I think they aren’t THAT stupid.

I’ve been mulling over an idea in my head for quite some time… The short answer is, I think it could be feasible, but it would have to be a huge update all at once.

Why the review bomb? 3k was disliked because the time frame it covered and the ‘civs’ were political entities.

This doesn’t fall into either of those categories, they could have called the Varangians the swedes I guess.
