Before the updates I felt that cavalry was already too strong in games, especially since it can overcharge the opponent quickly. Knights are expensive and time-consuming to creat, but once you have an advantage, it becomes very easy for cavalry players to win. The same thing regarding the Chinese nest of bees and Ottoman bombards, simply without the springald and columbrine serving as anti artillery in the game everything gets super unbalanced. Honestly, anyone who wants to make drastic changes to the game should think if it was better to make another game, I researched the game a lot until find out if I really wanted the Age IV and the balance was a strong attraction about it.
Most vocal opinions spoke ill of the previous Springalds.
Change to cav only takes effect in the late game. Nothing about early horseman knights to castle cavalry has changed?
Next cavalry was strong pre patch in TEAM games, but in 1v1 ( to which most of balance pertains) late game cav relegated to niche use unless you were one of the cavalry specialist civs like french.
Thanks for confirming that cavalry is unbalanced in the late game. I only play in teams and games usually go into the late game. A large portion of players only play multiplayer. I don’t understand why make cavalry special and why remove defenses against artillery. The argument that these changes only affect the late game is bad, people who play with infantry as an army corps will be greatly harmed in the late game. Historically, cavalry has declined with the rise of firearms.
The rework of culverin is indeed total cringe. Bombard vs bombard endgame is trash, I’ll just make 15 trebs.
The strength of cavalry, however, is kinda on point. This game takes place where gunpowder was beginning to establish itself. At that point, heavy cavalry was the major a** kicker, to which the most reliable answer was a equal or greater force of heavy cavalry (few exceptions).
Which is close to what we have atm - knights destroy everything except other knights, and then the balance can be tilted either way by civ perks, unit comp, or tactics. HC’s and heavy cavalry aren’t supposed to be part of any rock-paper-scissor mess - they’re supposed to be a concentration of resources to a critical point that flattens everything if you can get enough.
A horseman is just a soldier in a horse, nothing more.
agree.
I want to talk about Springald from the previous season. Why on earth do forum users say Springald is the problem?
Because the boring Springald War is happening?
To be honest, most people on the forums who claim that siege weapons need to be reworked are acting like children because they are not very good at using Springald and the controls for taking out enemy siege units are very poor. They’re trying to make the game into casual trash.
They don’t study why they can’t win, but instead thoughtlessly blame the opposing civ and claim that the balance has been disrupted.
I’m sure more than half of them haven’t even reached Diamond tier.
