New Gaelic Mercenary Units and Minor House of Stuart

I actually love those character designs. I would honestly only change one thing and that’s the axe to a sword. But for it being a mod I think it looks quite well!

OK, second shot:

Damn! I absolutely love it! That’s awesome! I genuinely love it!

I’m blown away! I think they look awesome!

They look great.

I’d add that the two-handed Claymores were used in the 1500s so with that in mind, this is why I suggest an Iron Troop style Merc, the Redshank makes sense - these guys had the two-hander, but they’d also have a short bow and quiver. Aesthetically, your unit looks like one, though you’d need a blue bonnet on his noggin.

Towards the end of that more feudal age, Highlanders literally melted the two-handers down and refused the metal to forge the classic basket-hilted broadsword claymore and then, with a hand free, they’d opt to use a targe.

This is why there’s decent potential for a number of Highlander units, with the Redshanks being the ‘archaic’ (1500s) Merc highlander (and the current Highlander being the common type that sought Mercenary employment on the mainland after the wars surrounding the English Civil War).

I agree. The more Scottish units the better. I would love having the Redshanks as an archaic two handed shock infantry unit which doubles as a skirmisher archer. I would also love to so more Jacobite era units as well, with the targe and baskethilt. I love the models you’ve created. Though Redshanks were known for wearing armor but either way I think they look great and I want them lol. I’d also be interested in seeing a Border Reaver type cavalry unit as well.

Thank you! I’m thankful you liked this mod. I’m still not sure if the gray of the clothes is right, of if we should keep the white thing on the kilt.
Exactly, where would you like see this unit?

Thank you.

The sources I’ve seen, all of them show the Scots with a bonnet like that of the Highlander. However, I want make the new unit different from them. They are the same model, so I thought a hat change may help.

I like the white part on the kilt. As for choice of headgear, there are a selection of Scottish headwear. If you are wanting to make them a more archaic unit you could give them something like a morion. It’s a helmet the Redshanks were known to have used. They were also known to wear either a cuirass or chainmail (even in the 16th century) you could try to incorporate that into the outfit. I’m not a modder so I’m not sure what you’re able to do or your preference for the attire (like I said I love the current outfit) but you could try to put a cuirass on the chest but keep the kilt coming across the chest and down the shoulder. On the other hand you could see if you like chainmail sleeves instead of the current white ones. But I genuinely love what you have already.

Ah good call. Yeah a Morion would look great.

Thank you, thank you! Lol

Just a little image sourcing:

A,D and E would be 17th century Highalnders whilst the other figures would all be 16th century Hiighlander soldiers including the almost naked man (a favoured tactic mind!). Figure B is a fairly good representation of a 16th century Redsanks - bare legs, bow and sword, though he’d be better with the two-hand Claymore. Skull helmets and Morions do indeed seem popular during the 16th century, though are replaced by the bonnet (mostly all blue in colour) in the 17th century.

Scottish (and Irish) Highland mercs - 17th century (primarily 30 Years War era). The Swedish noted that the Scots were armed with bows along with the more contemporay muskets and pikes.

18th century Jacobite highlanders. The most wealthy/highranking (i.e Clan Chiefs and their Tacksmen) would be sword and targe armed and the poorer with bows and lochaber axes. Highlander without even a bonnet were amongest the lowest ranking.

Bonus image - the Irish Gallowglass and Kern. A pretty spot on recreation of what these soliders looked like. Galloglasses were quite similar to a Redshank (though retained chainmail for a lot longer) and even used Claymores, however for vareity I’d have them using their Sparth Axe instead. Kerns would make great anti-skirmishers - I mean they even look like aoe2 Skirms! They’d be armed with darts/javelins and a shield.

My heart quite literally skipped a beat. Absolute perfection! I’m genuinely blown away! Stunning!

I need them in my game ASAP lol

Other interesting Scottish stuff includes:

Covenanter units:
During the 17th century there were Scottish Covenanter armies (which were on the other end of the spectrum to Jacobites!) which were made up of Highlanders and lowlanders well as pretty good artillery.

Covenanter Musketeers and Pikemen

Frame Guns

A Covenanter favourite - the frame gun was essentially refined leather cannons on a quickly deployed frame. Could be found in configurations of one to several on one frame. In-game this could be an interesting take on the Organ Gun - where you have to pack and unpack to use but can also add new cannons to it when deployed (almost like ‘training’ new units Daimyo style) up to a maximum of 5 let’s say.

Love it! Keep the idea coming. I’d love for as many Scottish units to be in the game as possible. If he makes enough units he could build # ##### ######## Faction mod lol he’s already my hero for his beautiful Redshanks but but he would be a God if he pulled that off lol

Idk why it blurred out the word “Scottish” in such a weird way, and why it blurred it at all

Don’t worry - the censoring is all kinds of odd - I’ve had issues with even saying Wee Bonnie Prince Charlie, ha (though it seems fine this time round!)
