Latest patch didn’t mention anything about this, but now the II III IV icons for say upgrades or units or buildings have changed to tiny little coloured icons which look…worse, IMO. I hope a mod can be made to change it back or have a options toggle to change it back because it looks really messy compared to the older clean fonts/icons used. Not sure why this change wasn’t listed? It’s actually from an accessibility point of view, a noticeable change.
It looks like it’s just the Age up Icon scaled down.
It’s clearly an improvement over the previous look because it looked exactly like the hotkey indicators.
But It would be better if they would make unique icons for it. Maybe it’s just temporary to reduce the confusion the previous icons had.

Confusion? Never had that problem personally, however I think a simpler way would just be to grey them out. I don’t play competitively and those that do more than likely have muscle memory of what the hot keys are, what age they are in and what units are available rather than relying on sight.
That’s the issue I have is that it wasn’t mentioned in the patch notes and the icons are tiny and ugly scaled down beads to me. Choice is key it seems in these games so I wouldn’t mind just a switch back and forth. If not, and no one mods it, I’ll look to do it myself.

It’s confusing to new players. It’s hard to see if you are not in the correct Age of if you are just missing resources.
The better solution would have been to have a 4th colour (1. Available, 2. not enough resources, 3. build limit, 4. wrong age/missing technology).
But from the looks of it it’s just a temporary fix, so you might not have to wait long before they add something better looking.

Well regardless, at least it’s something that is modifiable if the worst came to it! Hopefully on that topic we’ll get more tools so we can get custom units in again but until then, thanks for the Information 
The new icons look awful. The old ones were much better
