(New Mod) Chilly's Vietnamese Civilization now released!

What’s up folks! Over the past few weeks I’ve been working closely with modder and fellow creator u/Hoseinm81 to bring my design for the Vietnamese civilization to life. The result is an incredibly fun civ with a very distinct identity that I think you guys will really enjoy!

The Vietnamese center around “asymmetric warfare” in a way unlike any other civ in the game. They’re all about light infantry, hit and run tactics, traps, and “being a rat” - at least until the late game, that’s when they can unleash some truly awesome gunpowder weapons.

If there’s any Company of Heroes fans here I was especially inspired by the Panzer Elite playstyle - mines, booby traps, scorched earth tactics. It’s an archetype that I felt was sorely missing from AOE4’s current roster - so we made it happen ourselves!

To make my original design work within AOE4’s modding constraints, I significantly overhauled the design, but kept the same essence. Check out the full design here: Download the PDF

My personal highlights:

  • Worker Elephants are like Norse Ox Carts from Age of Mythology - a mobile resource drop-off. AND IT FEELS AMAZING.
  • Setting up minefields of traps is hilarious and possibly OP.
  • Rocket Elephants are 0% based on history and 100% based on rule of cool.

To install the mod:

  1. Visit the mod manager tab in-game, and look for the Vietnamese mod by hosein81 and hit “subscribe” to install the mod.
  2. Set up a game and make sure you enable the “Vietnam” tuning pack.
  3. Pick China if you want to play as the Vietnamese (Unfortunately we cannot create a completely new civ, so Vietnam replaces China currently)

Known issues to watch out for (full list available on design PDF):

  • Surrendering/Quitting games as Vietnam sometimes causes crashes for other players - be careful in team games!
  • Don’t set AI to Vietnam. They don’t know how to do anything.
  • Unfortunately modding tools don’t allow us to add new assets, so all visuals/audio are recycled from what’s already in the game.

Please try it out! You can play against bots (but bots don’t work when they try to play it), or, I especially would encourage you to set up some games against friends. I balanced the civ to be in-line with the other civs in the game. I’m especially curious to see how competitive players interpret the design!

And of course, if you run into any issues, feel free to DM me or comment on this thread and I’ll make sure to fix it. Cheers!

- I KNEW IT -

I knew that one day there would be people determined enough to create Civs MODs with the AoE-IV Editor, no matter its limitations. They did it in their time with AoE2, even creating special programs for that, Wars of Liberty was even based on AoE3, and now, finally, with AoE IV there are mod civs.

I think the first example with various modifications was the Persian Civ, and now a Vietnamese one, LOL.

Muahahahahahahaha!

Well, at least I know that if some civs “fans concept” never see the light, we can make civs mods. Thanks for your effort Chilly.

Now I feel more motivated to reveal more concepts: "Well, the true is that i have finished two, but the problem is that once I’m about to finish one, I get ideas from another, and I have 2 ready, but then I get ideas from others 4, and right now I’m determined to finish the Huns one, hehe. On top of that, publishing them takes about 1 or 2 days to upload the images, the extra text of History, and miscellany, it is not easy.

Hi Chilly,

Great work! If there’s a way to donate to you, or the devs at relic please let me know. Your spirit in helping this game along is great and I love it.

please please

This is absolutely fantastic! Special thanks to u/Hoseinm81 to!

Great to see these Civ’s come to life, although modded and sorta Improvized.
One of the biggest problems when coming up with Civ concepts is not being able to try them out practically!

Because if it is one thing I’ve learned time and time again, is that many things that sounds great on paper, might not work as great in practicality!

Also super cool that one of the top AOE4 player even played around with this mod!

Fun to see how the guys above avarage joe reacts to this!
