New Player

Hello!

I’m new to the game, I’m doing the Art of War and I’ve started the campaigns.

Could you recommend me a roadmap to learn the game? websites/videos with tutorials?

They can be in English or Spanish.

Thanks!

Welcome to the community! The Age series is a great RTS to be getting into, especially now since they’ve been releasing a lot of fresh content and there is a lot to enjoy. There is definitely a learning curve to playing AoE IV, but it’s a fun game to play at all stages of growth. Singleplayer is a great place to get acquainted with the game, but I have some things for you to watch if you’re interested in breaking into multiplayer.

Beastyqt is a pro player who has won several tournaments and has a decent media presence, he made this video about a month ago to help new players get into the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSQppoBgDXM

Further down the line I would recommend Valdemar as well, he has guides that go in depth on strategy and pro level gameplay in his series “Think Like a Pro”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SdhgUDbf1U&list=PL-m1PjfFKK77Xb0SzeGDQyKf5zj0cFcxF

For studying the game or looking through stats AoE4 World is the place to go. Their explorer has up to date information on each civ, and the twitch video finder is updated with games that are being played live. You can use that to find people who are playing the civilizations you are learning or if you want to find people who are live on twitch playing the game.

I’m not sure how soon this tool will be useful to you, but the aoe4 production calculator lets you know how many villagers you need assigned to a resource to maintain constant production. That will be very important as you improve in the game since the goal is to produce your economy and military as efficiently as possible. https://www.aoe4-production-calculator.com/

You can always go through these things again as you continue to learn, good luck and have fun!

you should have a check on Beastyqt’s youtube channel, he has plenty of guides and tutorials

if you feeol more comfortable with spanish, there’s another player who made plenty of guides, Vortix

both are world class players, you’ll learn plenty of things from them.
You can also watch them live on twitch if you want

https://aoe4world.com/ this site has plenty of resources, statistics etc

feel free to ask anything else

I’ve seen some tutorials made even from the first year of the game, are these still relevant?

better play other aoe to start before 4 so you get used to the mechanics that are more limited to those games and not messed up like aoe 4 which can overwheim new players

If it has anything to do with build orders or most gameplay I would stick to this season or the season right before it. A lot can change between patches, for instance everything before November 2023 wouldn’t include anything on the 6 new civs that were added in the expansion.

Fundamental skills like how to scout or what a fast castle strategy is or what to do with map control are different, those things are evergreen.

Aoe4world.com is great for looking at all the civs, units, and buildings. It also has links to other resources like videos.

As much as I often say that RTS games should be somewhat more accessible, I’m pretty sure AoE4 is one of the easiest AoE games in the entire franchise to learn.

If you’re going to be on an AoE4 forum scaring players away from playing AoE4 by “recommending playing other AoE before starting AoE4”, maybe you’d have to rethink a few things.

Sadly we have some regulars here who seem to have that as their primary goal.

For the new player, definitely don’t let this forum be your primary source of information or discussion.

Welcome!

I can highly recommend this youtube video. He explaines (in English) the general philosophy of a real-time strategy game and the very basics. He picked AOE4 and I think it fits super well as an example.

It challenged me to think about my approach towards the game. The game is all about handling growing complexity while being efficient, your skills grow over time. Things like that - good stuff!

Apart from that, I can recommend BeastySC2 too

Enjoy the game. Find your favorite civilisations and enjoy the hell out of them

Is that video the one where he talks about how RTS is fundamentally about multitasking and he uses the early game AoE4 scouting for sheep while managing your eco as an example of it?

If so, I cannot recommend the video highly enough. It’s by far the best intro to RTS skills I’ve come across.

It is that video, yeah.

I find it so good, I decided to re-watch it right after posting here

Makes you think more about your game plan

because other aoe has a better direction for what aoe 4 has taken from previous games. no scaring but a true fact about it. damn even aoe 2 is taking all the progress that was archived from aoe 4 in form of dlc but done better (not right) for what is supposed to introduce new mechanics without overshadow old civs which seems that aoe 2 is going to be the focus for developers and the direction for aoe franchise.
