To me from 1 to 10, cartoony to realistic

I think I’m going to sound like a grumpy old man but why invest time and money into creating fully functioning mythical creatures for a Age of empires game for a time limited event? Presumably once this event is over these creatures (which I will say look great) are going to fizzle into the ether?
Unless these units are actually being made for the Age of Mythology remake and are making a cameo in AOE4 then that makes more sense.
I believe creating assets for limited time events is a worthwhile investment. If they manage to roll out a handful of events in a year, that can be recycled for many years to come, and can add to the charm of the game.
I will however say that, much like the enchanted forest, I am not keen on the fantasy direction. It almost seems jarring after seeing how the Campaign presents its story like a historical documentary.
That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t want events. I just feel the theme should’ve been historical in nature.
I’m fine with ahistorical stuff in events. More assets for modders.
If we were going to get more historical assets, I’d prefer they be permanent, and not a part of an event.
I do think including them in Ranked is a bold move though. I figure the best compromise is if they were optional (like the biome was). Attaching them to maps in-rotation makes them feel necessary. But the effects are pretty minor, so who knows.
I’m fine with it for events.
However I can’t help but wonder, if you are creating some animal models, why not some new fauna for different biomes?
On the other side, AOE3DE received a lot of new skin and units with the new update. Hope to see the same efforts on AOE4, also on the graphic models
