So you’re using an incrrease in player numbers when a DLC is released to prove that the player numbers are going to go down when a DLC is released? Why do you think you have a point, again?
Because in normal games, the number of players doesn’t change when a DLC comes out. These are people who want to play the game but can’t.
Hahaha, what?! XD
I have no idea what you mean by “normal” games, but in the strategy genre, DLC is pretty much guaranteed to create a spike in player count. This is just plain fact. You can see this across the board and with other strategy games as well. Now, it basically stopped happening for AoE3 after the US DLC, the biggest spikes being free weekends and the free trial. It remains to be seen how AoM fares.
I wasn’t talking about strategies, because the only company that holds the strategy market other than Microsoft is Blizzard. And they never added new factions to their DLCs.
What possible reason could there be for not talking about strategy games? What other games could possibly have more relevance to DLC performance than other strategy games? How do you think this possibly makes your argument stronger when it undermines it? And even if your ridiculous claim that Microsoft was the only player on the strategy market (guess who owns Blizzard now?) was true, the AoE games would be the best comparison. But it’s not true! Relic exists. Creative Assembly exists. They have strategy franchises and you can see the same effect.
Why do you keep talking about a topic you clearly do not understand? Why do you not look up whether your claims are true before making them?
Because Relics made AoE 4, I can’t consider them separately (Dawn of War shit itself when the 3rd part came out. It’s funny, but right after this failure, Microsoft let them make AoE4 ahaha). I repeat once again, Warcraft and StarCraft did not release new factions in their games, I don’t see anyone to compare with. With First Dawn of War? It is still more popular than all AoE games combined. And yes, every time they released DLC, the game was transformed so much, as if it was a remake.
Is it regular attack a fire breath, or that’s it’s special ability? I would have assumed his special ability was trample damage
EDIT: I’m not sure I’m a fan of the stylized fire. No other creature has stylized fire. Looks weird and inconsistent in the art style.
its a very creative unit for sure, standing out much which can be a good or bad thing depending on the taste and point of view.
but i honestly don’t understand why they triedd to implement such a more “complicated” unit instead of like Yuki-onna or Nure-onna. but i assume they had their reasons.
Oh didn’t know about those two other creatures. Very interesting. Maybe the first one would be too similar to the frost giant in abilities?
Looks like a faster moving version of great flood, minus the building damage maybe?
What game doesn’t have a peak in play count when a new DLC releases? In what genre? You have any example?
Only counting bigger content releases, not small cosmetic DLC and not counting exceptionally awful DLC that were hated by most players.

Age of Empires 3 DE suffered from that problem, sadly. Player count stagnated compared to other games with the release of DLC barring early exceptions.
But other than that, yeah, “normal” games see an increase, not stagnation. Fingers crossed Heavenly Spear does well (though given that it’s adding a new campaign, there’s a good chance it will boost player numbers).
Really?
Aren’t almost all games loosing players over time?
Like what game isn’t the most popular in the first day/weeks after release? Very few games become more popular over time.
Free to play games often have a more gradual increase in player count but “normal” full price game games almost always peak at release.
Some how people think games like Fortnight or WoW are the norm, when in reality they are an absolute exception. Those games are so different to other games that their existence massively harmed the sale of other games when they were at their peak in popularity.
Think about popular full price games. Call of Duty, Assassins Creed, Battlefield or Forza Horizon, they all got the biggest peak on release and then more peaks with DLC or sales.
Like BF 2042 was 95% off recently.
A few of those games in those series were not released on Steam initially and only brought to Steam later, in those cases you can’t see the peak on SteamDB or similar websites.
My bad for being unclear. When I said “increase not stagnate”, I meant that player count received a bump, not a permanent increase. This was lacking in AoE3 for many DLCs (or at least very minor) while games typically receive a larger bump. Comparisons here are AoE4 or Total War: Warhammer 3.
The best choice would be the Mayans rather than the Aztecs. The Mayan civilization spans a longer period and is more suited to Age of Mythology, in my opinion.
But the Aztecs are an easy choice for creating military units. Eagle and jaguar warriors are very “visual” soldiers. I think it’s for these same reasons that they chose medieval Japan.
It’s a shame, because a little originality would be welcome in the franchise. We already have Age of Empires 4 for medieval Japan and Age of Empires 3 for the Aztecs (and I’m not counting Age of Empires 2, which does everything).
i am personally also for mayan empire. (even e.g. the winged serpent god name of the azetc is more well known)
but coming back to the upcoming dlc:
i REALLY hoped they would continue the style of the chinese marketing introducing units etc. and they even improved on it!
The Yokai of Age of Mythology: Retold - Heavenly Spear - Part One
really like that style! keep it up whoever was responsible for this!
(concept art is amazing! but i also really appreciate the ingame models the jorogumo is SO freaking cool really happy to see this one! kitsune looks great, the umibozu looks cool in both variants and i love it as an idea as a water myth unit (first mythic age humanoid water myth unit?) which can basically teleport to puddles of water! and the texts written are cooland thought out too! (had to giggle a bit when boit tried to read “femme fatale” and didn’t know what it generally means. xD
Were you surprised the that Jorogumo is a myth unit? I honestly thought it was just the campaign villain. This is the first time we have the campaign villain as a myth unit.
Um… Kamos? Gargarensis?
As in the campaign villain is the myth unit. They look exactly the same. Kamos was a unique minotaur and Gargarensis was a unique cyclops (I think his model was even different). If that makes sense? Sorry, I’m not explaining myself well.
Embark on a 12-mission campaign following Yasuko, a humble farmer’s daughter who discovers a magical spear and is swept into a mythic war. As she uncovers the spear’s secrets, she must battle the cunning spider yokai Magumo, the power-hungry warlord, Kagemasa, and ultimately face the monstrous Yamato no Orochi, the Titan of the Japanese Pantheon.
Looks like the villainous Jorogumo has a name. Also, Magumo has an elaborate headdress that the regular Jorogumo’s do not have.
