Next DLC Civs

Castille-Leon, Ethiopia, Poland, Khmer, Denmark, Inca

Most likely are Denmark, Spain, Khmer or Korea

Just look at the units available for Knights Templar and you have a good idea on what the new civs will be. Take in mind that this DLC was part of the next expansion until they decided to ship it standalone.

So i would guess Venice and Genoa (probably variants of each other so they share voicework, music, etc), Spain/Castille, and Poland. They would probably include an asian or african civ, probably Koreans. I would love to see Mesoamericans civs (Aztecs, Maya, Incas) but i don’t think they’ll be in the next DLC

That is pure speculation. We have no idea if the next civs will be related to those at all or even if there was originally 1 DLC.

All of these civs would be nice to have, but I’m hoping they lean into unexplored territory. AoE IV gets compared to the other games often enough that I think it would benefit from a civ choice that none of the other games have.

Something like Haida, Tsimshian, Tlingit (North-West America civs) would be good. There’s over 200 First Nation options in North America to choose from, there’s got to be something from that group that could fit into the narrative.

Mali and Abbasid are our only representations of Africa, there’s a lot in West Africa (Nigeria has a ton of interesting options, Chilly has a mockup of Benin from 2 years ago)

All I’m saying is, I hope the next expac breaks away from Europe/Mediterranean narratively. It would be the third expansion in that region if they focused on Spain or Italy (I still really want them!)

Of course it’s speculation friend, i’m no dev just making some informed guesses!
It just makes sense from a development point if they already have some art done for the new civs it would save time and money.

The split DLC part i think is something the community arrived at, based on the fact they originally had announced only 1 DLC for 2025 which was hinted by influencers and pro gamers to be bigger than Sultans Ascend, and then made the announcement that we would actually get 2 DLC’s, with the smaller one coming out first.

They did not announce that.

They told us they were working on DLC, they were very vague and we have no idea if it was 1 or 2 or anything about how big.

A couple streamers said what was coming was “a lot” or " massive" without having hardly any information. Some people took that as gospel and ran with it.

It has always been just assumptions. Same with some people assuming the 2nd DLC is bigger than this one. Maybe it will be, maybe there originally was only 1, maybe not. We have no idea.

We may see Amazigh, Castilians, Khmer, Koreans, Norse, or Persians in the next DLC.

I would like to see Vikings or Native Americans. Why??? Because they would have to make them even more unique. It is time to introduce another agresive civ to give the mongols run for their money. Imagine how would Viking raid feel like. Perhaps they will catpure villagers??? Plunder monasteries??? As a drawback they will not collect relics. As for Native Americans they would live in harmony with forests not chopping down trees to collect wood or the ability to replant??? Also share the nomadic lifestyle of the mongols. Pack up their tents and move but not their landmarks(sacred ground). However they should have a corn farm instead of sheep farming. Also I would love the dances to return from age 3. Maybe a rain dance to improve farms??? Yea that would be fun

American civs and spain is a must if we get the viking it would be a nice bonus.

I don’t think it works that way. If you want wood, you have to cut down forests, no matter what. How efficient your way of obtaining wood is is another matter.

Maya.- In fact, the fall of the Mayans occurred in part because they “overused” the forest, using massive slash-and-burn practices, damaging the soil’s organic matter and preventing crops from growing again. This led to famine, and along with other reasons (more violent religious sects than before, Mercury driving several kings and priests mad, competition for resources), caused them to decline and even abandon their cities. In fact, there are large patches of forest that, when viewed by satellite, show that they were originally cut down by the Mayans, but after they abandoned their cities, they regenerated over the centuries.

Aztecs.- They used a lot of wood, especially for the underwater pillars that formed the foundation of the platforms that made up Tenochtitlan, as well as their ships that passed through the canals. There isn’t much information about their techniques, as it was a craft, a guild-based project, and more of a secret than something you kept in books. They used copper axes.

Incas.- Don’t expect any economic benefits to wood from this civ, because most of their buildings were mostly made of stone and clay. In fact, for the game, the Incas should have bonuses or technologies for a improved gathering of gold, stone, and food in farms, but not for their harvesting of wood, which is excarse in the Andean Antiplane.

About the Mississippians or the Haudenosaunee, I have no idea; perhaps they could have had some benefits. The Haudenosaunee actually “abandoned” their cities after 10 or 20 years of being founded, because their longhouses weren’t built to last that long, and they moved to another location. They could very well play with the cost of buildings and recycling in that regard.

Denmark, Danes, and Vikings

There’s a big, big problem here. Something similar happens to the English: Denmark had very different army compositions in two eras: the Viking Age and the post-Viking Age. On the other hand, most medieval landmarks are precisely “post-Viking.”

The ideal would be to consider dividing it into two civs:

1). Norse / Danish / Danes (800-1066) - To represent Denmark in its pagan and Viking period, as the settlers were converting to Christianity. Also to represent the “Great Pagan Army” and the period of “Canute the Great”.

  • All their melee infantry would have shields and the “Shield-Wall” ability.
  • They could hold a festival to the Norse gods; they would work the same as the Mali Festivals or those in AoE3: Warchief. Völva as a religious unit.
  • Viking Plunder: They gain resources by destroying buildings and eliminating economic units, especially if they are religious.
  • Northern Adverse Conditions: Extra bonuses on Berry, Hunting, and Lumber gathering.
  • No stone walls, but stronger palisades, similar to Rus.
  • UU: Spearman Raider (has a shield), Norse Raider, Huscarl (has Svinfylking ability), Shieldmaiden (Javelin-Thrower with melee abilities), Jarl (Generals, improves infantry with passive bonuses), Berserker (Infantry with Berserker ability: Gain 5% melee resistance with each attack up to 50%), Ulfserker (Medium infantry, similar to the Berserker but with ranged resistance), Jormiviking (Imperial unit, very high armor and attack, cost a lot of gold; axe throwers and deal massive damage in melee). No gunpowder weapons.

2). Denmark - To represent their civ in their Christian conversion period, with stone structures, as well as other economic bonuses.

  • Technology Import - Every certain number of active traders increases the technology development speed, and their cost is reduced (-15%, -20%, -25%).
  • Some Landkmaks improve trade, to represent the Sund Toll.
  • They retain their building looting bonus (they haven’t forgotten), but no longer their economic unit killing bonus.
  • Norse formations: Infantry has the Shield Wall ability, and Men-at-Arms acquire Svinfylking (Swine array).
  • UU: Norse Raider (shared), Danish Axeman (shared), Heavy Halberdier (heavy infantry with anti-cavalry bonus and high attack, but slow), War Bishop (heavy cavalry and religious unit).

I’m still working on them a bit more, because I can’t decide which Landmarks the Vikings could have. I think for Imperials they could choose between the Jormviking Fortress and another one, perhaps a stone structure. At least with the Crusaders, I’m encouraged to think they’re possible, since they’re the first civ without gunpowder units. I don’t expect both to come out in the same DLC either.

  5. Novgorod Republic (Rus)

My idea of Polish unique units. For Example “Husarz” from 16th century

Ain’t no way we are adding top hat wearing units in AoE4 :skull:

I am once again suggesting a DLC of 3 new civilizations consisting of either 1. Spanish 2. Aztec 3. Khmer or alternatively 1. Portuguese 2. Inca 3. Vijayanagara.

It’s the perfect balance of three completely different regions in the world, all of which become connected in the age of discovery, each civilization having some kind of tie with each other. Technically speaking, Portuguese-Inca didn’t, but the Portuguese were very much present in South America and neither did Spaniard and Khmer, who instead had history with the later state of Cambodia.

But, these are still three very different flavours of civilizations who all come to clash in some way or another. I know people here hate the idea of American civilizations, but they are just as fitting as anything else in this timeframe. The game doesn’t present civilizations who could’ve gone to war, it simply presents available civilizations for you to play out these scenarios with. No, the Byzantines never fought the Japanese, and neither did China and Malians. The “fantasy” of what could’ve played out is already broken in that regard.

As cool as Norse society was, I don’t think they offer enough of a deviation in flavour from the existing roster compared to the options I’ve given above. We already have plenty of Central and North European flavours, and I think if we’re making yet another European civilization that the Iberian ones should be the next ones up.

And I’d hope the DLC to actually feature these civilizations, instead something unrelated.

Spain.

Vikings.

Aztecs.

Amazighs, hopefully amazighs!!

This will never happen, but a DLC featuring Portugal, Ethiopia, and Vijayanagara would be extremely diverse, cool, and very thematically appropriate. But also extremely expensive and time consuming to make, which I doubt they have the budget for anymore. And no way AoE4 gets Portugal before Spain.

I wouldn’t be so sure. They have opted to go for unconventional civilizations instead of obvious ones at times, in which case, my second option for a roster isn’t so bizarre.

I agree 3 civilizations is probably out of their reach, but IMO, it shouldn’t be.

Did you by any means happen to suggest that American civilizations aren’t appropriate? Because they are.
