Am I the only one who thinks that not giving actual chinampas to the Aztecs is a wasted opportunity to create something totally unique? Right now, we know that “chinampas” is an upgrade to regular farms and which changes their appearance into a poor attempt to give the impression that they are on the water, with canals.
I think it would have been much cooler to have real chinampas in water instead of an illusion. Here’s how this could have been done:
-Give the ability for fishing ships to build and harvest from chinampas.
-Clearance needed between each chinampas (in order to prevent any chinampas from being inaccessible as well as to prevent water walling).
-Chinampas benefit from farm upgrades.
-Aztecs would still have access to regular farms (obviously).
-Harvesting from chinampas would be safer then fishing, since you would build them next to your dock.
I’d like to know your opinion on this matter. Do you think it’s fine as a simple (and unflavorful in my opinion) upgrade? Do you prefer my idea? Do you have anything to suggest? Thanks for reading.
Yeah, in the AoM Aztec Mod (not the RotG, the other), there is a mechanic of Chinampas for water maps, and Aztec are very VERY Broken getting more extra places for fishing than any other pantheons.
You’d be able to build your chinampas closer to your dock, so it would be safer then fishing further away. As for the advantage, I don’t see how that would be a problem. Don’t all civs have advantages over the others? There could be a build limit as to make it balanced. The general idea is still very feasible.
Care to explain?
There are so many ways you could make this balance. There could be a build limit, they could cost more than regular farms, base harvest rate could be lower without upgrades, etc…
Is none of you tired of all civs having the exact same farm? In AOE3, there is the farm, the mill, the rice paddy, the field and the hacienda. Why would it have to be the exact same boring farm for every civ in Retold?
In AoM currently all civs are roughly equal on water. If you give one civ a big new economic feature on water it would significantly shift the balance, especially because not all maps have water. There are many hybrid maps in AoM which could become a huge bonus for Aztecs.
In AoE2 they just accepted that water is not balance but most maps being played are pure land maps.
All the examples of different farms from AoE3 are all on land and all just variations of the basic Mill and Estate.
This only alters the balance of the game if there is no counterbalance, which I’ve already made suggestions for. Also, while I agree that all civs are equal on water, that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Part of the success of the original game was because of the asymetry between each civ. However, naval combat was always boring with close to 0 difference from one pantheon to another. In Retold, there was a good attempt at making water gameplay more interesting, but all civs still look the same in water.
Also, my idea could be summarized as “Aztecs can collect food closer to their base”. This looks like a pretty normal bonus any pantheon/god could have. I don’t get why it sounds unbalanced to you.
