Order of the dragon here

My dream would be to see a “modern descendant” of AoE 1. AoE 2 got AoE 4, AoE 3 doesn’t need it.

You may hate me, but I actually really like Order of the Dragon.

The concept of the faction in terms of gameplay is to have a faction of strong, yet expensive units. Basically an elite army. An order of noblemen, predominantely dukes, barons and lords from the territory of HRE matches this perfectly.

They have the coolest name of all factions. A nice flag. The units look badass - esspecially the knights. Only wish they reskinned the buildings as well like they did with the Chinese civ variants.

(Speaking of which, the Chinese variant is really all over the place. I don´t understand how neo confucianism translates to the gameplay with monks and special cavalry units…)

We’ll see once the DLC releases, but in RTS in general, a few high cost, high damage tanky units do not fare well against hordes of cheaper units.

High damage units overkill so there’s wasted attack potential. They are easier to focus on, especially from a distance and it’s harder to come back from minor defeats given their high cost. Also, you can watch Spirit of the Law’s videos on how numbers superiority works (he did a good one on an ants experiment) but in short, 2 units deal twice the damage (clearly) but critically, don’t receive the full damage from the opposing unit as it dies faster. The more units you have, the greater this effect.

That’s why elephants are not seen often and are usually amassed mostly to finish off an enemy.

My hunch is that we’ll see swarms of crossbowmen or zhu-ge nu being used against OotD. I’m really interested in how the meta is going to evolve vs OotD and how the devs are going to address the numbers disadvantage.

The extra range and faster shooting ranged units could be really strong. Bonus range is a huge deal when it comes to unit power. Gilded archers sound really strong as long as they can’t get run down too easy (they sound like better longbows but more expensive)

Hard to really judge without seeing any numbers. Knights are good units and they are relatively high cost tanky high damage units, so it’s not like the idea is totally without merit.

might be one or two new ones or they have different effects but same names and looks

Conceptually I do like the idea of Order of the Dragon, stronger and more elite units.

BUT, from a unit point of view, I wish there were more uniqueness than ONLY the retexture. I would rather have some specific unique units instead of simply Gilded Archer, Gilded Men at Arms and Gilded Knights etc etc.

I would rather have something that looks visually different or has a unique touch to it. Could have bohemian, hungarian unis or whatever may fit as there were many nobles part of the Order.

Alongside some of the units being stronger “reskinned” versions of the same. But at the very least, 1 or 2 unique, very unique units.

I find interesting the concept of the civ. Let’s see how it pans out.
