True,
I guess I’d just like to see more European unit/weapons represented as UUs. But a lot of people here complain about them adding more European Civs
Besides the only way they can add more to Europe is to get increasingly granular with their definition of civ, something people on the forum also seem dead set against.
Should be named Skoutatoi instead of Limitanei since Limitanei disappeared not long after the rise of Islam & that’s quite early into the history of ERE.
As for the unit effect I’d rather have something unique instead of just stat increase, for example stat changes depend on what formations they’re in e.g:
Line Formation (Changed name to Foulkon): Slower movement speed but increase in damage against charging units & increase Pierce armor.
Stagger Formation: Faster movement speed but increase damage recieved from projectiles
etc
Yes, I would give a second UU to the civs that don’t have them… all those in AoK, except Vikings and Persians and now the Chinese, those in TC except the Spanish and Koreans, those in TF except the Incas and Italians, those in TAK except the Portuguese and Berbers, those in RotR except the Vietnamese (since they have the Imperial Skirmisher), those in TLK except the Tatars and Lithuanians, the Sicilians in TLotW, the Bengalis in DoI and the Georgians in TMR… then the rest of the civs until now have had 2 UUs (the Romans, those in Chronicles except the Athenians and well the Three Kingdoms civs that have 3 UU each one)…
When I was a teenager, having two (land) unique units for each civ seemed like such an obvious move in a second expansion. I was surprised that the Forgotten Empires mod didn’t take that approach.
I like the savar but don’t like the fact that it upgrades from the cavalier – visually the unit moves backwards in time and several hundred miles east. I have similar issues with the legionary too.
Possibly suggested already – I think it would be good for them to have a unit to replace the hand cannoneer that doesn’t use gunpowder. A ranged foot unit similar to the slinger is the most obvious, but how about an anti-infantry hussar alternative instead?
I’m not sure what you mean by this – the only relevant thing I know of from Herodotus is the idea that camels counter cavalry?
Could be an interesting premise for a mod to rework or even remake the old civs from scratch along more historical lines.
Time will tell…for balance reasons we can start with 2 UU per civ and at the appropriate time in about 5 years we can add 3 UU per civ…look how in AoE 4 each season they add at least one UU to some civ (in this season of AoE 4 they gave the Trade Caravan to the Abbasids and Ayyubids and the Black Rider to the HRE)…
Yes, although it makes sense, since in The Forgotten they added an extra crown for civs that didn’t have it and adding an extra UU would have made balancing very difficult at that time… now it could be done easily, since they now have the experience of balancing AoE 3, AoE 4 and Retold…
In theory, the Goths have handcannons because they also represent the Crimean Goths, who received gunpowder from the Turks until they were conquered by the Tatars in 1444…
In theory, though there are other European civs that continued to exist beyond the creation of gunpowder (Celts, Sicilians, Britons) though they seem to represent specific early eras of those factions.
As for the Goths, between their unique unit/techs and their appearances in campaigns it’s my impression that they are specifically representing their pre 1000s era. It just seemed odd to me having Huscarls next to harquebusiers.
At the end of the day, a lot of the decisions can always just have been balance related also I guess
Of course, the Celts should be renamed to Gaels and have the gallowglass and well the Sicilians lasted until the 15th century when they were annexed to Aragon (Spanish)
Of course, in theory the Goths represent the 4th to 8th centuries, which is why they would have to be reworked if the developers add a barbaric DLC and they no longer have gunpowder itself…
In one of the discussions about how to rebalance the Armenians and Georgians (when the problems were simple, good times), I suggested that the Svan Tower should replace the Entire tower line. Like the Donjon, but you still have to pay for upgrades. Their peculiarity is that they give +5 population. A tower-home hybrid, at the same cost as a tower. Same logic as the Folwarks.
Wow, u know so much about Theodoro principality, but it is more remnant of former Byzantine Empire than keeper of Gothic ethnicity. Idk what was in 1444, but the principality was a tribute state to Golden Horde remnants and was conquered by Ottomans in 1475.
This sounds like the kind of upgrade that goes against the general gist of aoe, which is an upgrade changing a unit into a fundamentally different one. The fact it becomes a gunman is in and itself a fine unit idea, but for the heavycamel to become the gunpowder unit itself is drastic unless its like “camels get a recharging shot that lobs a bullet (with 0 frame delay or attack interruption)” but still act like melee fast anti cav specificalists
