I haven’t played much Aoe4 in the past year or so, but I’ve been trying to get back into it recently, however one issue seems to just ruin the game and that is people leaving right at the start of a ranked game resulting in everyone else leaving and therefore a loss, and even sometimes a automatch cooldown? For my teammates leaving, am I supposed to drag out a 4v1? After playing something like Marvel Rivals it was refreshing to see when this happens, the game just ends and no one gets the win or loss. Why is this still a thing if its such a prevalent issue. I’ve only been trying to play for 2 hours and lost 3 games due to this.
Typically someone will leave early if its determined that one side isn’t a “scrap team” but instead a organized group of friends. There’s no point in playing those matches honestly.
in other games if u queue up as a group u get higher rated players. that doenst even apply here. the matchmaking is so trash. these developers really are unskilled as f. i mean the game lags and stuff really bad employees. only the art department and overall civ design did a good job.
“About the possible reasons of the quitters:”
If it happens in the first few minutes of the game it could be due to several reasons:
1.- CRASH.- the game crashed for someone on the enemy team
2.- Loss of internet connection.- someone on the enemy team had a power outage.
3.- AFK due to some problem and disconnection.- It can happen, like your food burned or a family member came, etc.
Now, recently this season has been the one with the “fewest” disconnections in team-ranked and 1vs1 I have observed. I want to assume that the connectivity to the game has improved a bit more.
However, in the case of Crashes, they are more frequent, especially when new patches are released. Many it is because these are not compatible with older versions of Windows, and if some players do not update the operating system, or the drivers of the graphic card, then that happens.
“About the Intentional Quitters”
I remember it happened sometimes in low ranks, but as one advances in league, the degree to which it passes is reduced. I don’t see the point in quitting once the game has started, because the point of playing ranked is to look for a challenge, if one quits before even starting the game, What’s the point to play then? On top of that, you lose points for nothing.
It’s worse in teams, you know that people are going to “boo you” if you quit for the most frivolous reason, so it 's an unwritten rule that you shouldn’t give up until the very end, if one can continue playing even without landmarks.
In fact, what happens a lot is that they are removed “Before” the game starts, in the Lobby, but rarely in the game.
The ratio of players who quit at the very start “on purpose” is low.
Now, if we talk about not at the beginning, but at 6 or 7 minutes, already in Feudal age, many times it is due to tension or people who have very timed builds and are very perfectionist: To the point where if they get killed just one villager or they get surrounded by a rush they weren’t expecting, they give up. It happened a lot with HRE players who don’t know how to defend themselves from a knight rush, or people who don’t know that if their landmarks are destroyed, you don’t lose, but you have to destroy all of the team’s landmarks.
Matchmaking is good, the devs don’t control the behavior of players
If you care about your rank and don’t have a group, play 1v1.
If you don’t have a pre-defined group, either don’t care about your rank, and just quit when other quits, or find people here of your level that want to play with you and then make a group before doing 2v2 or 4v4
If you dont have friends just dont play. Got it
I got matched with conqueror 1 yesterday, in 1v1, never played against conqueror before.
I learned a lot from the match though.
I have random disconnections from my provider, that lasts between 10 and 30 seconds. I tried a lot of things, repairing files, fresh installs, but it comes from the provider and I cannot correct it.
Basically I don’t feel the bad effect on any games except Age of Empires games.
Sometimes happens at game start => game freeze and instead of reconnecting properly, free win for my opponent (5 games in row, happens every season, ruins all my stats, what a lovely experience : half of my losses in solo and team are due to bugs)
Sometimes happens mid/end game => same result, free win for the opponent and growing frustration on my side.
I guess i’m stopping Age of Empire games, as we are in 2025 and still can’t reconnect to online games… I mean comon, this is possible on every other games… Me and friends never had a frustrating experience like this before, it even ruins their stats and our team games stats.
TLDR : we are in 2025 and you might start considering basic things like allowing users to reconnect to games for a minute after a crash/disconnect for example (also could imagine a forced “pausing” system until the delay to reconnect ends). This is totally ruining the game experience in ranked, and even in normal games. Also sometimes happens to my opponents that surrend with no reason, I guess they crashed.
As for team games, instead of neutralizing all the buildings and units of the disconnected player, why would’nt you let the remaining players manage those until the disconnected player reconnects for example? They could still continue playing by managing more ressources than before. Passing all the buildings and units to neutral is totally useless, and the team with less players will obviously loose. All our games with a disconnected user solded in surrender, there is not point to try to win something quite impossible.
As a help I’ll tell you what happened to me recently:
-
My router was working so badly that there were internet outages of 2 or 3 minutes, randomly 2 or 3 times a day. That ruined all my ranked games and multiplayer matches, since the maximum they can wait to reconnect is 1 minute.
-
The solution was to change router, and they also told me something curious: The cable that connects the internet to my computer was half damaged, so they cut it, put a new terminal, and now the internet works better and I haven’t had any new disconnections.
I suggest you check if it could be one of those points. Other reasons for disconnection, caused by desynchronization and not by the internet, may be due to the Hardware:
-
Desynchronization: This can happen if too many commands are loaded into the units and you don’t have enough RAM or a powerful graphics card, or for unknown visual bugs. The best thing to do is to “Pause the game” if a desynchronization problem appears so that your computer has time to synchronize.
-
RAM: At least get 16GB.
-
Monitor: Configuted for the correct GPU conectivity, (normally for good GPUs is HDMI), with enough FPS, 1 ms. Be cautious with Curved Monitor, because they don´t let you paint or write, dont be fooled by their cheaper prices. A plain monitor is better, but with the best options (1 ms, 1080p minimun, good HDMI connector)
-
GPU: I used to play with a 2GB one, and it works fine in 1v1, low graphics, but there is 100% desync in 2v2 or multiplayer games, and it goes around 10 or 15 minutes. I would suggest at least an 8GB GPU, and for current games at least that’s the minimum.
-
Extra GPU rant: Recently many companies that make triple AAA are getting so greedy that they purposely misconfigure their games to “force” users to use 16GB or 12GB GPU even if they have average graphics cards, worse or equal to 2012 games, which according to my brother is more marketing to force people to get expensive graphics cards. Examples are the visual decline of Five Night At Freddy’s 8, which forces you to play it with a super-powerful card, even though NOTHING important is loading, and the graphics are ultra-simplistic. Let’s ask ourselves how it is possible that SkyrimV ran ULTRA-WELL with mods with 2 GB of GPU, but FNAF 8 crashes and bugs having much worse graphics and even less statistics. Planned obsolescence, nothing more to say.
Anyway, I hope I can help you.
Hi thank you for your response, hope i’m not being rude there
For specs, i run on 5800x/rtx3080/64gb ram, the computer is a beast, so that would never be the issue;
probably fully related to my provider.
I’ll see again on router side but I don’t think I have any problem, the game has not been designed taking all those points in consideration to allow for the best user experience on multiplayer games…
How is someone gonna determine that within the first min lol
I play at diamond/conq, and this happens very frequently, usually within the first min
