The eastern roman empire split from the western roman empire surviving until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. other branches such as the empire of trebizond also fell in the 15th century

The Byzantines got a mercenary cavalry!
There are two different heavy cavalries.
One is western and the other is more eastern.

Byzantines?, they were known as the Romans, Empire of Nicea, and Greek Empire. Byzantines is a modern term to use to refer to them. Its worse than calling the Abbasids “Saracens” or the French, Holy Roman Empire, and English as “The Franks”.
