Player Retention Matters More in Low-Population Games

This isn’t about one specific feature, it’s about the overall health of the game.

Right now, the multiplayer population is not large. That means every active player, especially in ranked, matters more than in bigger games. Matchmaking quality, queue times, and overall competitiveness all depend on having enough consistent players.

The issue is that current systems can permanently remove players from the ecosystem. Whether it’s bans, restrictions, or other enforcement systems, the end result is the same: players leave and don’t come back.

In a large game, that might be fine. In a smaller one, it has a noticeable impact.

When active players are lost:

  • matchmaking becomes less consistent

  • queue times increase

  • skill gaps widen

  • the overall experience declines

And unlike large games, those players are not easily replaced.

This creates a mismatch. The systems in place feel like they are designed for a much larger player base, where losing players has minimal impact. But in the current state of the game, player retention should be a priority.

This isn’t about defending bad behaviour or removing rules. It’s about recognising that in a low-population competitive game:

player retention is critical to the game’s long-term health.

If players are pushed out permanently, the game doesn’t just lose individuals—it loses stability in its multiplayer ecosystem.

I think this is something worth seriously considering going forward.

Receiving an indefinite chat ban led me to uninstall the game permanently, I won’t be returning. No problems here anymore, but again I did enjoy the game but wont be putting up with it as its the last straw for me.

It’s frustrating that things like inappropriate usernames or other questionable content can exist, yet basic trash talk in a 1v1 ranked setting results in a penalty of this severity. “Indefinite” in practice functions as permanent, especially when multiple appeal attempts lead nowhere.

As a result, I chose to leave the game entirely.

There are also other issues affecting the experience, such as Elo mismatches and inconsistencies in army movement speed across formations that makes competitive play terrible.

I know people have a common habbit of totally DEFLECTING the points made here as they always do. But it doesnt fix how the elo, moderation, gameplay bugs that are structured right now. Keep making more DLC and take forever to fix existing issues. I wont be supporting that behaviour I’m glad that just before I got banned I held back from buying the Demeter DLC, what a state that DLC was released in too.

Nah, if someone was banned and is going about in the most roundabout way possible to show how much it is an issue for the health of the game but wont explicitly explain why they were banned the people prob know they deserve it.

In my opinion at least, the smaller the community the more accountability to be had. You dont want to face the trash talker toxic player for the 10th time in a row. People that create a bad enviroment for the game should be dealt with.

Long term for any game with small population people become known, for either their good things or their bad things. in Extended edition you knew who crashed the games when they were loosing, who cheated their way to get elo. Who trolled others for his own fun of it and the community began to isolate those players. Same deal on voobly., it happens weather the devs themselves do it or the community.

As to your side note: Yea it would be amazing if all bugs got fixed between big releases, really should be something that would be great for the health of the game if it happened

All these problems are caused by premade teams. If premade teams didn’t exist, your chat probably wouldn’t have been restricted. Premade teams just harass and ruin the game all the time, and they’re the main cause of bans and mass reports in ranked matches.

Permanent bans should only be allowed for hacking the game in ranked matches, and there shouldn’t be a permanent ban for using the chat because premade teams are the cause of trolling, harassment, and toxic behavior in the game. Premade teams harass you until you lose patience, then when you respond, they mass-report you and post you in private Telegram or Discord groups to get players banned.

In short, premade teams are the main reason players are being driven away and the game is being ruined to the point of a massive player loss. They’re also responsible for keeping players stuck in their ranks, making it impossible to progress or climb in rankeds games.

Could you at least read what is written? Danbee said:

This has nothing to do with TG…

Im not even trying to pest you this time, it just makes no sense based on what OP themselves said was behind their ban…

This definitely should be a reason to permanent ban.

Well you should know the game is DEAD

Game deserves it player count for how it handles different processes.

Sure, you can call it dead and move on.

Yea… how dare the devs not allow you to be toxic in game, that will totally show them. Sure thing. That aside, its been shown time and time again thats not the only metric for if a game is dead or alive. Most of the playerbase is fully casual with a deeper focus on single player, but sure, justify your need to both be toxic and be enabled to do so.
