I’ve always wondered what the most popular way of playing AoE3 is.
My second would be treaty vs people. I generally prefer team games over 1v1 in both.
I’d have multiplayer supremacy as my first one, but the meta of all Ottomans all the time kinda gets grating real fast.
Most people who play only look for campaigns and single-player content, but this game offers very little of that, and they also don’t frequent the forum.
I used to play treaty team games, where I can play with mostly every civ fine.
Now I moved to supremacy teamgames, in part due to DE impossibility to:

Even with around 30 votes, I’m surprised how many people play singleplayer, bc I feel like a weirdo when I haven’t played multiplayer even once. XD
I’m a weirdo anyway. At least here I can be honest about it.
I mostly play Supremacy Comp Stomps that I host online.
Some people don’t play multiplayer and will not play the game for a while after that and when they do come back they will replay the Campaigns and Historical Battles so there should of been a option that list “I mostly play Campaigns and Historical Battles.”
alas I can’t change the poll after it’s posted but campaigns/historical battles should be counted under “singleplayer supremacy vs AI”
Really interesting results from the poll, thanks everyone who voted! I am really surprised to see treaty is not very popular. I remember back when I played AoE3 multiplayer on ESO ‘treaty’ (informal no-rush rules) was by far the most popular game mode based on the number of lobbies I would see.
I probably should have put an “empire wars” option in the poll, I forgot about that. Not sure if there’s any empire wars players who feel unrepresented. Sorry!
It’s also super interesting to me that, at least for forum users who vote in polls, there’s just as many people who prefer singleplayer to multiplayer. For me, I just don’t enjoy playing strategy games online because I find it super stressful, so I stick to singleplayer. And AoE3 DE has the very best singleplayer experience of all the RTS games I’ve played. The AI is extremely good, it doesn’t cheat that much and just plays really well, reacts really well, and does surprising things. Even playing the same civ, same difficulty level, and same map over and over I’m constantly surprised by the AI. The AI was already pretty good in AoE3 but they improved it so much over the course of the DE’s development. So cool!
They were the most common on the browser, but they took forever to fill and i think it was the same 15 lobbies for 20 minutes, while there were like 45 supremacy ones that filled and started in the meantime…
But yeah, treaty is a lot less popular in DE, thats true
In general i feel ESO had a lot more compstomps and scenario lobbies aswell. There was always a COLLO/WOLLO and most of the times Risk or FoodWoodGold
Well, that’s normal; most players never touch multiplayer. They’re much more likely to play their favorite campaign or custom games against the AI.
Competitive players are indeed a vocal but minority group in most cases.
Aoe3’s always been such a comfy game for me that I’ve admittedly spent most of my 20 years playing it single player. I still aspire to get into MP at some point, but with 3 young kids I wouldn’t want to be that arsehole who was constantly going afk, haha.
