Please add an option to disable enemy chat

Hi everyone,

I’d like to bring up something that has been bothering me for a while in Age of Empires IV: the lack of an option to completely disable chat from the enemy team.
I’m not talking about muting someone manually with a command during the match — I mean having a proper setting in the options menu to permanently block enemy messages, no matter the game.

After losing a close match, or simply due to inexperience, there’s nothing more unpleasant than seeing the opponent type “ez”, “so bad”, or straight up insults. Losing is already frustrating enough when you’re trying to improve — having someone rub it in your face makes it even worse.

Some people say “just mute them,” but honestly, if this keeps going, I’ll end up muting half the player base. It shouldn’t be the player’s job to manually extinguish one fire at a time. The game should offer a setting to prevent this kind of behavior from reaching you in the first place.

Games like StarCraft II or League of Legends have had this feature for years. It’s a simple quality-of-life option that would make a huge difference for those of us who just want to focus on playing and improving — not dealing with post-game taunts when we’ve already lost.

I sincerely hope the devs consider adding this in a future update.

Thanks for reading.

Best regards,

Sounds reasonable. Not too many reasons for random opponents to chat with you, so yeah, why shouldn’t you be able to turn chats off? There’s no real need to be forced to see "gg"s or "ez"s, especially if the latter is so frequent.

And maybe there should be a ‘sportsmanship’ rating/scoring system added, too:

  1. At end of match, rate opponent 0 stars to 5 stars in terms of their ‘good sportsmanship’
  2. In game settings, you’d be able to set the rating and quantity of ratings in which you’ll allow chats from opponent
  3. Maybe you choose “4 stars” and a “minimum of 50 ratings”, for example, in which case you see no chats from anyone with a rating lower than 4.0 and fewer than 50 ratings

Agree, I just don’t like those who type ez, you can even see it on PvE (didn’ t hurt anyone yet annoying.)

I would love for them to actuallly remove censorship in-chat, but actually give you the option to turn off enemy or all chat as long as you want.

All good ideas, I’d like to add a semi-related feature request: blocking pings. Last I checked muting chat from someone doesn’t mute pings, and some ppl spam ping like 20 times per second and the sound is so fucking annoying I have to mute the entire game.

You can edit the the config file of AoE 4, so the profanity filter gets disabled. I would love a disable enemy chat, since the Devs dont punish bad-mannered players. And if you dont punish them and dont give an option to mute the enemy, you are encouraging a toxic culture.

Disable profanity filter:

Disable Profanity Filter AOE 4

To disable the profanity filter in Age of Empires IV, follow these steps:

  1. Go to C:\Users$(USERNAME))\Documents\My Games\Age of Empires IV .
  2. Open the file configuration_system.lua in Notepad.
  3. Scroll down to line 135, which contains Setting filterchat .
  4. Change the value from True to False .

After completing these steps, you will be able to see uncensored messages in the game.67

Note that the chat filter is a server-based feature, so disabling it on your end may not affect how messages are displayed to other players.

An example of what we players have to put up with from rather immature people:

It’s exactly these kinds of situations that I want to avoid.

There needs to be more tools the player can access to address this in real time. Disabling chat and/or quickly muting other players in a live game is a must have feature. Most other multiplayer games give the player a hotkey to quickly toggle between having all-chat be enabled/disabled.

Reporting players after the fact or manually muting everyone you play against before the game starts is not an effective solution for the problem at hand.
