This unit is the Pesetero, available to Spain in the Wars of Liberty mod, and it could replace the Skirmisher.
During the reign of Philip V of Spain, in 1735 the Mountain Fusiliers Regiment was created due to the need for troops to protect and patrol the Pyrenean frontier.
These troops were recruited mainly from the regions surrounding the Pyrenees, including Basques, Aragonese and Catalans, who were familiar with the difficult mountainous terrain.
The Mountain Fusiliers were part of a broader Spanish tradition of light troops, with predecessors and later units such as:
- Miqueletes β Catalan troops.
- Chapelgorris β Basque troops.
- Peseteros β named after the one peseta they were paid per day, an old Spanish currency.
For this reason, although Pesetero is the name used in Wars of Liberty, the unit could represent this broader tradition of Spanish light infantry.
The name could also remain open, with options such as:
- Pesetero
- Mountain Fusilier
- Miquelete
- Chapelgorri
In Age of Empires III, it could replace the Skirmisher for Spain.
Given the historical endurance associated with these troops and their experience fighting in difficult terrain, one way to differentiate them could be by giving them more hit points, especially since Spain currently has no cards or bonuses that increase the health of its Skirmishers.
Alternatively, the unit could also be introduced through the Tercio Tactics card, which is currently rarely used, giving the card a new purpose while adding this unique Spanish unit to the game.
