I still see some benefit in letting us have quick access to the civ overview via a mouse rollover or something, though, too see what the unique units, techs, and capabilities are – in addition to having the name of the civ told to us. Tbh, it seems like an oversight to not
mention it
Yeah, but I liken this to how some people by their nature listen to music and never really pay attention to or remember the lyrics for songs they love and have heard a thousand times. A thousand more listens doesn’t mean they will pay attention to the lyrics, as maybe they just love the melody and composition a lot. The civ icon is a detail that I just don’t pay attention to that much despite playing hundreds or thousands of hours of AoE2DE
I always put the enemy AI on full random, so really don’t pay attention to what civ lands in front of me when the match starts or the brief splash screen that shows in the splash loading screen before the match starts. Even if I did, I still don’t know what their unique capabilities are, and I don’t want to pause the game mid-match to see. There are so many civs, I just see them as a card shuffle and the next enemy to defeat. I have no idea what their special capabilities are. They’re just the next foe to defeat while I play the match the exact same way that I always do. If it was a Ranked match, there is absolutely no way I’d pause the game to look up their civ overview.
I just thought it would be a nice touch to have the info on the stats screen, especially the civ overview on mouse rollover, because you just got done playing against the civ and it can help explain some things, like how did they advance to next age faster than you, or what were those unique units you saw, or why were your cavalry not as effective as normal against theirs, and so on.
With this info being contextual (on the stats screen), in-the-moment quickly helpful, it saves us from having to hunt it down on some civ selection screen and painstakingly viewing there. What if you faced 2 or 3 enemies? Now you’re just having to painstakingly hunt it down for 2 or 3 and hope you remember what civs icons you faced, AND spend time doing that regarding a past match when you are trying to start a NEW match. I will probably continue to never look it up this way. I’m curious, but not so curious I’m going to spend a bunch of time and energy on something the UI/UX could and should, ideally, easily help with.
I’ll just keep on doing what I do. And if I happen to memorize the icons and the unique stuff, great. If not, then oh well.
I played with the same civ for like 10 years, and am starting to branch out after watching the latest TTL, I just thought my idea would help me on my journey to get a little better and be more cognizant of the various civs the game has, so they don’t all feel like the same civ with re-skins. Others might benefit if they’ve fallen into a rut, too. It might inspire some players to try other civs, and to see each civ as being more unique than they maybe thought
