It’s not about Casual vs Tryhard. You can be a player that enjoys competitive play both casually and sweatiIly while wanting a certain standard of gaming experience. They want big battles. They want tons of units and buildings. They want to feel like they are commanding the crusades or be Hannible crossing into Rome. For that demographic, a tower or two within the first few minutes of gameplay, snuffing out this powerful well-known civilization, feels bad. It feels contrary to their understanding of what they are doing. Seems just wrong.
I personally, don’t care. But I can definitely sympathize with people that do.

Hello,
I just had a Chinese tower rush after 3 minutes of play and it’s really frustrating and anti-game. The removal of the giant maps in 4v4 has favored this rush based gameplay (rams, towers, etc.) which makes the pleasure of the game suffer.
For my part, I find it very annoying, both for my own enjoyment and that of new players who don’t even have the time to understand what’s happening to them and who get rushed quickly. I find that the tightening of the maps in 4v4 are very harmful for the players who wish to have beautiful battles more strategic than a simple rush which rest on the strong points of the civilizations through their ages.
Those players need to wait for deathmatch and or treaty modes to be introduced. Until such time all non-bug exploit strats are fair game from early rush to turtle fast imperial.
LONG LIVE THE TOWER RUSH!!
I think there is a simple solution against tower rush.
Do it like they did in AoE2.
Outposts is a different type of tower, and can’t be garrisoned.
The “Normal” tower only comes in Feudal age.
THey could also make it simply that You need to research Garrisons in feudal age for towers to garrison.
solution even more simple:
return % of resources if building cancelled.
because now you can not justify fighting with vils or place counter tower, while opponent can chancel and return 100%.

They only get 100% return if it took 0 damage, its imperative that you siege and force a cancelation.
do you 100% sure? and do you speak about aoe4?
cause on release it return 100% always.
i do not remember changes for that
and i remember a bug: you chancel stonewall and get free stone, because it could not calculate correct “return value”
