I literally wrote in my last reply that they should adjust the animation speed, not keep it as it was in base AoM. Anyways I made my point, you have yours and this doesnt lead anywhere so I am going to stop posting in this thread for now.
Where are their goals listed? Where is anything from them listed? I can’t find anything about development beyond “Yes we are doing it, look how cool the new animation is”.
Don’t forget that Heroes are being buffed too. Not just Myth units. The instant kill was balanced in the first game. No reason it can’t be balanced in the new one. They just need to try rather than give up entirely before they even start.
Yeah, this is a really bad change and should be reverted. It’s so lame to see Cyclops and Kraken throws just bounce and injure a soldier rather than kill them. You could always remove the insta-kill effect from heroes or myth units if that is considered a balance improvement.
The other change I really dislike is the new Centaur ability. It doesn’t seem to fit the unit thematically at all, and I do miss the sniper shot it replaced.
Heros have always been immune to myth special abilities, and the cyclops were only able to use their ability on humans, not myth units or siege weapons.
The Mummy now cursing several units at once, and those turning into minions if they die while cursed, may actually be a thematic improvement over a straight one unit being killed and turned to a minion every 20 seconds. If that’s a nerf in terms of balance, that’s anyone’s guess. But paired with something with high aoe damage, this has the potential for large undead armies.
i hope they adress the issue regarding showcasing hidden stuff like the old bonus o# #.#. avenger and cyclops vs myth units. not a personal fan of that. especially since every civ now has more and better tools (heroes) to deal with myth units even they are stronger now.
i really thought cyclops throw didn’t insta kill always in EE but maybe i just didn’t pay attention enough. i just remember as a kid in old aom they always insta killed and i found that throw really spectacular. - no i still think it is cool but has its obvious flaws. ^^
as far as i know cyclops does splash dmg / a cleave-attack now. if thats true i think that buffs him for sure at least a bit.
i think both fit. new one is more flashy and i think they made this change cause in the old cinematic they do something very similar like their new special ability. (just watch it and you know what i mean. some guy on reddit made this quite plausible connection)
Cyclops didn’t get a different damage or attack. The only thing different about his throwing ability is that is doesn’t outright kill enemy units anymore. I’m not sure it did that 100% of the time in the past either, but it did often enough it might as well be. In Retold, what I saw more often is getting a soldier from full health to half health, maybe slightly less. Outside of that, it’s exactly the same cyclops. (Maybe there’s a price difference or minor stat changes, but I didn’t notice anything. The aoe damage the impact of the thrown soldier deals was always there. I remember playing in 2005 and causing 5 trees to fall over at once, simply because a Cyclops threw a spearman into the forest. Needless to say, spearman was dead.)
As it should be. Lobbing a foot grunt into a forest should kill him. Same with the kraken.
As for medusa, a fair compromise could be she can only petrify dead “living” creatures. In this way, automatons, colossus, mummies and the battle boar would be safe. That’s one from each culture that are immune to medusas stare so could easily act as a soft counter.
As for the mummy, I personally am warming to its new mechanic, having initially been opposed. But I think it works thematically for it and isn’t either a nerf or buff, but a change.
Additionally, did the Minotaurs ability get a nerf? I can’t remember it being able to headbutt myth and cavalry away now?? Would be a shame if so considering it was a good crowd clearing ability that wasn’t insta-kill either
I distinctly remember minotaur throwing ability leaving survivors in the original. But you’re right, I don’t remember minotaur throwing/headbutting cavalry or other myth units either. But if the minotaur can do that now, that’s a buff, not a nerf.
So in the original, the Minotaur headbutt didn’t kill, just wounded a bit but knocked them away. It worked on all human soldiers and most myth units (can’t remember if all). I think if it’s lost its ability to headbutt t and myth that’s a big nerf because now it’s special ability is pretty much useless…it’s micro headbutt was good to knock a myth unit into a space you could surround and kill it.
It’s a shame so many myth units are losing abilities. I don’t think (as said above) the cyclops, kraken and Minotaur should’ve been nerfed in this way. It wasn’t OP or balance breaking at all.
Okay, I must have misread then. I thought you were saying it can headbutt cavalry and myth units now, and couldn’t before.
No no mate, could before, can’t now. Shame really IMO. What your thoughts on it? Nerf or ambivalent?

Maybe all Myth units being made weaker is the tradeof for making them cost 3 rather than 5 pop? IDK.
Kinda goes against what they were saying though about making myth units and god powers and the mythological/divine aspect the focus of the game…end of the day, if the devs don’t revert it back it’s a real shame but I’m sure there’ll be mods that do give back some old abilities
Would be a shame to need mods to fix something that never should have changed.

Unless the minotaur’s gore ability hits multiple units at once, there is no good reason for it not to affect other mythical units or cavalry
It’s odd cos it seemed to do the animation to myth and cavalry, but it didn’t affect them and no damage was taken off…Minotaur should 100% have its full ability back
That sounds like a bug - not a nerf
If the unit is doing it’s attack animation for using it’s special attack, then it’s probably trying to do something but just failing to actually activate the ability
yep definitely a bug.
Yeh I hadn’t quite figured if it was a removed ability with lingering bug effects, or meant to be in but bugged out. I’ll report to official beta forum as a bug.
Thank god the Minotaur wasn’t nerfed like cyclops and centaur too!
