Poll For Single Player Civs

It added a new architecture set and voice lines for all the new civs. 3K does not have any new architecture sets and it also doesn’t add any new voice lines for any units except heroes, which makes the content lazier and lower effort, therefore adding less than TLC and not being worth the same price. Don’t be fooled by numbers, because the effort put into the higher number of civs is far less than the lower number of civs. You are not paying for the amount of content; you are paying for the amount of work the devs do. Because of this, 3K is easily the most overpriced.

I still can’t believe they recorded reactive voicelines for heroes but not for new civs :skull:

Would the language 3k facions speak differ from ingame chinese voices as all of them are chinese?I would argue the other 2 civis are lazier as they just reuse chinese and monglian rather than try to port aoe3 voices for juchens.

fair enough. the screenshots had me fooled that they had added a new architecture set, but it’s all just scenario editor objects.

Overall the trend is still towards less content for the amount of money we are asked to pay.

By “new civs” I mean Jurchens and Khitanguts, WuWeiShu aren’t civs :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, and meanwhile in AoE 3 it’s the opposite… they went from “look there are new civs” to “sorry, there are no new civs now, go to the modders”…

Yes, I didn’t mind seeing the Flemish revolution, since it’s based on the Norse power of Ragnarok and the revolutions of AoE 3 (the First Crusade of the Sicilians was much the same, sending reinforcements out of nowhere as if there were a home city); and it’s not like there haven’t been revolts in the Middle Ages, but it did feel like they jumped the shark and were testing whether people liked it or not, and since people didn’t like it, they went back to something lighter, but it’s noticeable that they’re running out of ideas and are about to turn AoE 2 into AoE 2.5 or 2.9 (the latest civilizations prove it by being directly copied from AoE 3)…

I was talking about the last 2 DLC not just the very last DLC.

That was the DLC with the most content out of the earlier DLC that is true, but all other DLC before 3 Kingdoms had less content.

AoE1DE should become an AoE2DE Expansion

I am still in favour of allowing people to purchase RoR without owning AoE2DE and I think it’s stupid that they never allowed that. But I do think it’s good that they are part of the same game and same engine so AoE1 automatically gets all engine and path finding improvements of AoE2.

I still want a crossover game mode or at least get the AoE1 units in AoE2. Now that we have Chronicles you can’t argue anymore that they won’t fit in thematically.

I did not actively ask for it but I since I play both AoM and AoE3 that have mechanics like this already I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all.

I don’t really like the shield mechanic but I do like Auras. I don’t think I actively asked for them though, not until they first appeared in the game. I think Auras are way way more realistic that Monks. A soldier marching and fighting more disciplined when the commander is nearby makes a lot more sense than someone magically healing all his wounds because there is a pries 20m away.

I think I did suggest the 3 Kingdoms for Chronicles when Chronicles was new. But I did never want them to be part of the main game.

I can’t find my posts about that because they are deep in some long discussions about Chronicles when it was announced but I made this thread when 3 Kingdoms were announced:

[poll] Should the 3 Kingdoms Civs be Chronicles civs?

Now I think they should be in their own set called something like “Legends” that can include future civs that also have heroes like King Arthur.

in that case it has slightly more content than the first few DLC (2civs, 3 campaigns) or about the same as DoI, while costing double. Cumulative inflation since 2020 is about 25%, not 100%. It’s just greed.

fair enough. I stand corrected.

I still don’t see the point of it, why not have aoe1 as its own thing? downgrading aoe1 to be an expansion to aoe2, feels like it devalues the game.

for the rest you are admitting that you didn’t ask for it, you just think they are fine now. that’s my point.

I can see a few potential ways it could be beneficial, but none of them have really played out in practice.

It probably takes up less disc space than two separate games would – but I expect the saving is minimal (I think most of the total file size is graphics) and it also takes up much more space than just one game would, so this is actually a negative for someone who just wants to play one of them.

If there was some sort of compatibility between the two (e.g. crossplay) it would make sense – but there isn’t any, and you can’t even use content from one in the map editor for the other. Likewise you can’t feasibly use random map scripts or scenarios from one in the other – they would need editing heavily to work sensibly.

I suppose there’s some kind of argument that from a developer point of view, it’s easier to maintain than two separate games – but as far as I can see, they’re not maintaining AoE1 in any meaningful sense, they just plonked it into AoE2 and then abandoned it. RoR is just as likely to inherit bugs from AoE2 as it is to benefit from “engine and path finding improvements”.

By the way, one thing I dislike about Return of Rome is the title. AoE1 is about way more than Rome – Romans are on the very edge of the timeline (/technology line) and weren’t even in the original game.

I love AoE1, but I actually think the unofficial HD version is still the best way to play it…

I don’t really want to get involved in this argument, but I do want to point out how silly this argument is. I play Warcraft III which has heroes with auras – they work well in that game (it’s heavily designed around them) but I don’t think heroes or auras fit well in AoE2. Context is important – a mechanic can be very fitting in the context of one game and completely inappropriate in the context of another.

Yes, that’s true, I suppose it’s a matter of getting used to it.

Yes, that’s true… WC3 is a watershed moment in the RTS genre, between classic RTS games (1992-2002) and modern RTS games (2002-2010)… after 2010 with SC2, it’s like the end of the RTS as we know it, since after that came the MOBA boom…

At this point it feels like you have more fun arguing with people than actually playing AoE2

Which is honestly sorta of concerning, especially since you seem to think you are a majority in feeling the way you do.

Perhaps you need to seek help in real life, talk to friends and family or whatnot and try to find real closure. Instead of constantly complaining that a remake of a 20 year old game gets new content when you could just play the older versions.

For some reason loading an earlier patch of DE is blocked. Yes, he can go for HD or Woobly if he really wants, but they miss many QoL features that DE introduced.

I’ve been playing it more recently and so far the lack of QoL stuff isn’t bothering me much, though it might because of how used to I am with playing CD.

I’ve played the CD version of AoE2 with my cousins for a long time around when I was 7 and then burned it into my computer when I was a bit older. And continued playing it until 2018 when I bought HD on steam. So I played it for around 20 years or so.

In my mind I don’t even see CD/HD and DE as the same game, they’re too different once you get past the surface level changes of less Civs in one. So I can get why one wouldn’t wanna play HD nowadays, though in my opinion if someone doesn’t wanna support Microslop’s current business model they could always compromise and go back to the older versions of AoE2.

Even decreasing player counts can have a significant impact on how a company treats their playerbase. Though at this point I don’t trust the Devs of DE to make any sound decisions, especially after the latest patch and lack of bug fixes.

you revived a thread after 8 days of inactivity, just to insult me? do you realise how ironic this is?

we even agree on this. That’s why I am asking that they let us revert to previous patches.

If you’d like to play a previous version you may be interested in this guide i discovered, Steam :: Steam Community

I’m saying this out of genuine concern, not vitriol. There’s more to life than an RTS game.

Agreed, and I’ve pointed this out myself multiple times, but people always tell me it’s inappropriate to say this on a forum about said game.
