[poll] Future Chronicles Civs

The developers have already confirmed that there will be new Medieval DLC again starting next year.

On top of regular medieval DLC, what do you want to see in AoE2

  • I want more Classical Antiquity civilisations (Chronicles)
  • I want new time frames/settings (Bronze Age, Early Modern, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, etc.)
  • I want more AoE1/RoR content in AoE2
  • None of the above, I only ever want Medieval Civilisations
  • None of the above, no more AoE2 DLC!

What Romea ad Bellum (Rome at War) civilisations do you want to see in Chronicles?

Spartans, Athenians and Persians will be Part of Battle for Greece.
Civs like the Armenians, Goths or Huns will get a new name to not overlap with AoE2 civs if they are being added.

I know there are a bunch of potential civs missing but I’ll keep it with the official Romae ad Bellum list for now.
Some old civs fit in that time period pretty well though like the Mayans for example.

It’s more about what civilisations you want and not exactly how they were implemented in Romae ad Bellum.

What AoE1 civilisations would you like to see in Chronicles or other Spin-offs

I left the Persians and Greeks in this poll because the other Poll also still has some Persian and Greek civs in it.

the Huns and Goths in the mod were the original civs with 2 additional UTs. I think they dont need to be added here or could be replaced. For example with the Vandals.

Other then that, I hope to get all the Civs of the Mod. Judeans have a nice campaign potential with the Makkabean Revolt and the Armenians were very well designed in the Mod.

I agree with that. I just added them to the list because I wanted to be unbiased.

They could be reworked though.

I hope they go beyond that list though.
Han and Gupta are kinda lonely out there in the East.

I agree. The Mod was never declared complete. Also Etruscans would be interesting.
What I also would have liked, if they go ca 100 years more back in time. The big battles between the Meeds, Assyrians and Babylonians would be the origin story of the Achaemenids. Maye this is possible, after the current Mod Civs are all implemented.

I think it’s too early to say, since we haven’t played Chronicles yet. We don’t yet know how the naval combat will play out, whether the other new mechanics will be fun or clunky or frustrating, or whether the campaign will be any good.

I mean, I could answer the question – but it would be an uninformed answer of negligible value.

Thematically I would want more civs from the same rough era. Mostly so Chronicles does not feel like a “one-and-done” deal setting-wise.

But also so potentially we can get a separate ranked mod only for these civs. It would be pretty awesome to play these new civs online ranked, but against Middle Ages civs it feels like a mis-match. But allowing some cool match-ups from history to be played out online as well as in a campaign would be really fun. Plus it would get more people interested once there’s more than just 3-6 that are playable.

I vote for more medieval civ in AoK, antiquity civ in Chronicles and to put Stars Wars Galactic Battleground (the original game + two civ for the third trilogy)

For the next DLC in Chronicles I want : Egyptian, Roman and Carthaginian

I want to have Egyptian

Archetypal antique civilization. Remove horse archer and put chariot archer instead. Put chariot cavalry (not like the persian chariot, egyptian chariot were more lighter) put a pharaon single unit trainable in the town center. Maybe elephant if they also represent ptolemaic Egypt. For UU : medjay.

Punic war DLC

Roman

Civilization with legionary and centurion like AoK + velites instead of skirmisher. A civilization analog at the existing roman civ but a little different.

Carthaginian

Good to have the Punic wars. For the UU : numid cavalry or balearic slinger. Elephant and archer elephant in stable but not for an UU because this unit were utilized by another civ (ptolemaic, Epire, seleucid). UB : cothon : an improved shipyard

Iberian
Numidian

For a middle east DLC

Al the below civ must have camel

Judean

With zelot for UU. Slinger in archery range. For the UT : Age 3 : People’s Front of Judea or Judean People’s Front. Age 4 : Campaign for a Free Galilee or Maccabees

Babylonian

UU : babylonian archer : like the ratha, they use big shield to protect them

Assyrian

UU : assyrian ram, a big siege tower

Nabatean

A camel civ with camel archer for UU. Bonus for caravan.

Phonenician

Hittite

Nile DLC

Put a new wood source : papyrus

Nubian

Have regional unit with egyptian civ : egytpian chariot and chariot archer. UU : medjay or nubian archer

Chinese DLC

Ancient China have a rich history. I think than the famous and megalomaniac Qin Shi Hangi deserve a campaign

Ancient China

They use chinese chariot, Dagger-axe warrior. They have invented the crossbow and even the chu ko nu in antiquity. I think they can have gastraphetes before age 4.

Xiong Nu

A nomadic civilization, the major threath north of China in this period

Yue

Peoples of southern China were called yue, some of them were the ancestor of the vietnamese

Choson

Ancient Korea

Yamato

Ancient Japan

Celt DLC

Regional unit : carnyx, demoralize enemy unit
Regional monk skin : druid

Cheat unit : menhir thrower (like Obelix)

Gaul

Briton

UU : briton chariot. A little charriot used in the Cesar time. Fast but weaker.

Pict

UU : Woad raider

German

UU : a type of cavalry (german cavalry was used by Cesar)

Other civ : scythian, parthian, , Thracian, Dacian, Illyrian, Maurian, Etruscan

Greek civ : Macedonian (with elephant like Pyrrhus), Seulecid, potelemaic Egypt, Cretan (with archer UU), Pontus (with scythian chariot)

I don’t want to see civilizations in Chronicles who are better in late antiquity and middle age like and those who are already present or deserve to be in the game AoK : Goth, Huns, late Roman, Vandal, Suebian

I hope so as well, the absence of major civs like the Assyrians is appalling

The mod focuses on the time 500 BC to 500 AD, that is past Assyrias prime. They were conquered by Persia before 500 BC.

You gotta cut of at some point or else you will end up with Sumeria vs. USA.

Only by like a century, and the mod already features the Phoenicians, which were litterally conquered by the Assyrians.
Anyway, I think including Assyria is perfectly justified since it was the first civilization to trully implement post Bronze-age collapse technological advances, like cavalry. So basically all later empires like the Persian, Macedonians and Romans owe so much to them that I think it would completely fit the time period and I don’t think its fair to compare it to the USA.

However, I do agree that pre-Bronze age collapse civs like Hittites or Sumerians is just too much, since basic “gameplay features” like cavalry and naval combat would not fit them.

On the other hand,I’m not a big fan of pushing the timeline beyond the Crisis of the Third Century. Not only because regular aoe 2 already covers that, but also because warfare was already becoming a bit medieval by then (decline of infantry, hegemony of cavalry, etc.).

I agree. Babylonians, Assyrians and Meds are for the mod like the Goths and Celts for aoe2. A bit on the border but still fitting.

I would draw the border with these 3 civs. Also, because there is no other big players before them except if you go 500 years back more to the hettits.

The Phoenicians still persisted under Persian rule and were one of the major enemies of the Macedonians during their conquest of the Persian Empire.

But we could certainly argue that they should not be in either.
Anyway I just wanted to make the poll as unbias as possible so I didn’t add any civs that are not in the mod.

That part of the mod is pretty much pointless for Chronicles because the AoE2 civs are simple just available. In the mod they were basically just the AoE2 civs anyway.

Though I think there is some potential outside of Europe like a Yamato civ.

Edit:
I just added all the AoE1 civs in a 3rd poll.

I also wanted to vote for the Phoenicians :smiling_face_with_tear:

I think limiting the scope to the year 500 BC is a bit arbitrary, nothing of note happened then, it’s just a round number.
The end of the Bronze Age collapse and the transition to the Iron Age is a much more significant event: the advent of cavalry and naval warfare, the rise of the neo-Assyrian empire (which changed forever how large states were managed, and heavily influenced later empires like Persia and Rome). It is actually a more drastic change than the one that took place between Antiquity and the Middle Ages

That was a pretty significant event I do agree.
I just state what the creators of the mod decided.

A lot of things that happened in the Dark Ages after the Bronze Age collapse are still not well researched.

The first mission of the Campaign is set in 522 BC and set in Mesopotamia. You seam to be conquering Babylon in it. Your enemies in that Scenarios are probably just Achaemenids too though.

I understand. I just hope that if this become an official part of aoe2, they will change the scope of the project a bit. Other games in the series have already expanded their timeline over time.

Most likely, there’s no other civ to represent them for the moment. Hopefully a Babylonian civ will replace them in the future.

Are you sure? I think it was conquered in 538 BC

I hope they add the Italian cultures like The Etruscans, and the Samnites, and early Rome with the storyline being Rome’s rise from hamlet to dominate culture in Italy.

Be careful. I remember once offering suggestions and was promptly given angry warnings.

Interesting that the Roman Empire is the most popular one at the moment, despite it technically already being in AoE2 twice.

The Roman Republic would make a nice bundle with the Carthaginians and Gauls. Perfect for a Punic War campaign. Gauls played a not insignificant part in that.

Egyptians and Macedonians are also popular and would make a nice combination for a Alexander the Great campaign, but we already have 2 Greeks in Chronicles so that would reduce the variety a little.
Nubians would be a good match for the Egyptians for sure so we have 3 civs for a DLC again, if they keep that number.
