POLL: Should the Variant Civilization Names Change?

He jokes a lot, we all know that.
We just have to ignore him and let him be
He doesn’t care about the civ names, but he loves to criticize our criticism…

Let me share Idam Isgreen’s joke.
I want that responsibility. I want Age of Empires 4 to be a trusted source of history. I think we can do that justice; I would be over the moon if people were like, ‘man, this is legit!’ because there’s been some shaky history in the previous Age of Empires games," laughs Isgreen.

“I want Age of Empires 4 to be a trusted source of history” - Laughs Isgreen

I don’t like hero units. I’m okay with a couple civs based on heroes since some people like them, but I hope at least two of these variants are not. Giving too much power/abilities to a single person becomes super unrealistic and hard to take seriously. It also takes the focus off the “empire” and the “civilization” and puts it on the “hero.”

I don’t see why they can’t do what 0 AD does where there are multiple heroes per civ but you can only have one on the field at a time.

It’s official now
It’s on Civilizations page: Civilizations - Age of Empires

It’s just the civ name, like Jeanne d’Arc, not French - Jeanne d’Arc or Jeanne d’Arc (French)

How a new or returning player will know is a variant?

I mean with that definition, the Mehter is basically a hero unit.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
:sob:
This means that the devs completely ignore the opinion of the players. There are already ten topics on the forum about the outrage of civ names. They don’t hear us, they don’t want to hear us, and they won’t hear us! How long will the game live with this attitude to the community?

We still have two months to make a difference, the trailer only came out like a day ago, they would not have had time to even brainstorm and finalize what they should change the civ names too, much less get that updated on the website in time. We just need to keep pushing for this change and make the devs well aware this is an IMPORTANT matter that the community cares about.

Devs must’ve have this under their bed

I am also identifies as a “Jeanne Fan Club” member as well

Kudos to the devs for “attracting new players”.

We now have “it’s a f**king name who cares funis more important find more important things in life” people as the majority.
If you care about (sliiiiiiiightly more) relevance in history you’re a loud minority now.

What a great time to be an AOE player!

I have already checked.

But it is still nothing but the name, so there is no need to get worked up about it until there is more info.

As I’ve said before, not a fan of the names either. But people start to make a bunch of nonsense up because they dont like the names

Okay…

But if someone calls you using a nickname “curse words etc” or “something”
You wouldn’t be happy at all.
And the worst part is that if they start using it all the time, you might get psychological damage.

Yes, famously, DoW III’s problems were due to “appealing to minorities”.

Talk about making stuff up for clicks :joy:

Most people are not making stuff up, we just understand that in order to make ACTUAL change we have to be both loud and persistent. The majority of the community involved player base does not like the variant names, and we need to make sure the devs remain aware of that long enough to actually encourage them to change it.

I wish we could have enough trust in the devs to just expect they would fix it easily, but this topic was already brought up to them previously by the NDA folks who got to see early and didn’t get changed yet. They need to see that its a serious problem that won’t go away. This is unfortunately just how the modern gaming industry is, they WILL change it if it gets enough traction. We just need to keep the momentum.

But beware. If you use too harsh language, or too wild speculation, or maybe an inappropriate comparison, someone will throw all of us once more into the “jail for doomers and haters and loud minority and those who don’t have a life”, and another conspiracy against the game is crushed, and the merry majoooooority will live happy ever after again.

“There will be mythological creatures in the faction and the leader will be a god running around” this is basicly the concept of what some are saying

^ if you tell me that stuff aint making up stuff, I don’t know.

Well a grown up should be able to voice their opinion without being rude, not saying that anyone is and I do encourage people speaking up about issues. But there is a difference between.

“This is wrong because of X, Y and Z. It should be change to fit the game and have a historical authenticity.”

VS

“These devs they know nothing, [insert insults]… Here comes the mythological beings, they will probably add space marines into the game now and the new content is trash I just know it.”

People have been dragging content in the dirt they haven’t seen or played. All the wild, uninformed ‘speculations’ are muddling the issue at hand. Which is that the names just arent right. That is it, create 100s of threads if you like.

I’m not going to stop anyone from being overdrammatic and coming up with insane hypotheses

But dont you agree, you can have some resemblance of a discussion without the unnecessary as exampled above?

Jeanne d’Arc

It’s a MOBA now, you only walk around with 1 hero unit.
No villagers, no soldiers, no buildings.

The big question:
Did the marketing team come up with those names or was it the opposite and the marketing team forgot to tell them that those names are awful?

Maybe it came from COH where many factions are army names like “Afrikakorps”….heck no. That faction is called Afrikakorps, a real army name existing in history, not Rommel or “warriors of the desert fox”.

Edit: kidding of course
