POLL: Should the Variant Civilization Names Change?

Even ‘Varaint Chinese’, ‘Variant French’, are better names!

Dropping just one fun fact for you history lovers.

“Variant civs” concept doesn’t exist in history and is entirely made up think so complaint should directed at that and not just names.

So isn’t it bit hypocritical to nitpick things u think are ok and not when it comes to accurately presenting history

Think about it

The typical image of “one-who-does-not-care”:

Care so much to the degree of returning again and again with 1000 different excuses to fend off “those-who-care”.

Well said there!
20 characters

I want to preface this by saying I absolutely love this game, have almost 600 hours in it, and I want it to succeed and be around for many years. I’m not trying to sound overly dramatic but they are seriously threatening to ruin the entire thematic consistency of the game with these variant civs. Huge turn off. While smaller empires that never would have been added on their own could have been the focus, I’m thinking Kingdom of Jerusalem, Celts, Gupta Empire, awesome stuff like that. Instead we get “Jeanne of Arc” and “Empire of Jade.” Que up multiplayer match: 19 year old girl that was around for 3 years vs THE 3000 YEAR EMPIRE OF CHINA. It’s ridiculous, not to mention the fact Empire of Jade doesn’t exist whatsoever. “Sultan’s Army?” Which Sultan? If you named Joanne why didn’t you name the sultan?

Also, what happens when half the civs have hero characters and the other half don’t? It’s just going to make a mess of both balance and the historical focus of the game, which is what the game was marketed as being… a history documentary style campaign experience. Age of Empires doesn’t have heroes, that isn’t why people love the way Age of Empires plays. It’s just weird to pair a crusades themed civ alongside a bunch of variant civs that potentially have nothing to do with the crusades at all.

A person, who is already cover of the game, cover of French, is getting a whole civilization as well.

Yea instead of “smaller civilizations” it seems we’re getting “hyper-specific armies which may or may not have even existed.” Jeanne wasn’t even a military commander, she basically acted as a motivational speaker that helped plan and coordinate attacks for the actual commander. Having an entire civ named after her is beyond silly. Makes way more sense to give the faction a single “heroine” unit like the English king that buffs troops, that would be cool.

I agree, to name these variant civs like this is flat out silly. I hope to god they are just placeholders and the devs are trolling us.

I hope they are Omegatrolling, I hope we would have information about them in a few days.

  1. Make the variant a new landmark for each era. So, for example, if you pick french you can specialize in Joan D’Arc army by choosing the specific landmarks.

  2. In the menu where we choose civilizations, make the variants a sub-item of the main civ. So you can play with France, for example, using whatever variant you want. In this option, you have the advantage of being able to create several variants for the game’s base civilizations

  3. Change the name of Variant Civs

This functionally an entirely different thing. Definitely not an actual option.

These civs are too absurd to be true. And each name is wrong for different reasons. It is impossible to make one claim to all civs. They all have different problems. Fantasy, person, abstract army, real order but not related to HRE. There is no single logic in these problems. They seem to have been deliberately created wrong for various reasons.
I think that these 4 civs only matter if the real names are encrypted in them. And similarly should be sought not in historical, but in names similar in letters.

French Variant → Jeanne d’Arc → Jerusalem

Abbasid Variant → The Sultans Army → Ayyubids Sultanate

Chinese Variant → Empire of Jade → Joseon
Update (better version):
Chinese Variant → Empire of Jade → Jin dynasty

HRE Variant → Order of the Dragon → Order of Templars
Update (better version):
HRE Variant → Order the Dragon → Teutonic Order

What do you think about this version?

Update:
In the Official Teaser Trailer we hear: “They cross to the east to seize the holy city of Jerusalem. We called them the Franks.”
We know exactly what’s in the company. There will be a kingdom of Jerusalem. It is based on the civ of the French. The Civ of Jerusalem is 100% already in the game! Devs already make this civ. But not in multiplayer. Instead, we have a variation of the French in the form of Jeanne? Seriously?

I pro your version bro. Otherwise dev can just call name civ 1 to 4, and I don’t care anymore, lol.

Btw if they made Korea a variant of China, people would be even more upset, so… no.

You’re too toxic. You made a great topic with poll. Here I want people to discuss other options. Or is it only your opinion that has the right to exist?

He’s just being realistic. Sometimes developers really surprise everyone and make welcome changes to things that people don’t like. More often they tune out the voices of the community and just kinda do what they want. I’m genuinely hoping the team behind AOEIV will continue to be the former, not the latter. Can’t blame him for getting burned a few times and having stuff he likes decline due to poor decision making or an inability to remain faithful to the IP, I know I’ve been there.

If Korea a variant of China, I’d suggest at least reskin. Korea does share something with China ancient time but they definitely have their uniqueness in architecture, language, and units (ex: turtle ship)

Initially, I supported the protest. And I even made a topic here with a boycott of this DLC. But I am very surprised that the developers are still silent, given the uproar. Maybe everything is going according to plan?
