POLL: Should the Variant Civilization Names Change?

Mate, I hope u are right, except for Joseon… Koreans won’t be very happy to be a civ variant of China…
Besides that, great thinking and I really hope this is it, and you are right. :grinning:

The Templars were French though.

I don’t think you are right but I wish you were.

I still have the hope that they will change the names.
There is still more then a month until the release of the DLC so more then enough time for them to do some cosmetic changes.
It’s not like changing the civilisation names (and maybe flag) will take time away from the balancing team or something like that.

Devs are usually told to not engage with community and keep away from community for sometime before a release… It is to make them not reveal info about the content and not be persuaded by the community … thats why you see many incomplete game being released like battlefield 2042, cyberpunk 2077 despite the objection by the community

SO I dont think devs are aware of the fuzz we are making

I agree. Teutonic is probably more logical. Added to the topic.

That might somewhat be true but it’s not like they are perfectly shielded from the community.
Also there are people that are payed to communicate with the community and this communication works both ways. If the community team notices that there are a lot of people out there that are unhappy about a decision the will certainly relay that to the team.

Those are probably bad examples.
Especially with Cyberpunk 2077. The game was delayed so often that the majority community wanted to get their hands on as soon as possible.
There are surprisingly little people out there that understand that a rushed release will mean an unfinished game
CD Project also didn’t have unlimited money. Game development cost money so you have to release the game at some point.
Sometimes you can only chose between releasing the game or bankruptcy.

Obviously EA wasn’t going to go bankrupt because of Battlefield, they are a lot larger publisher.
But they sill have to face a similar decision.
Delay the game by months and lose a lot of money, or release it and hope it’s good enough.

It’s a gamble.
You can’t know how much more time it would have needed to be good, and how much less sales that would mean.

Also Cyberpunk just got it’s 2.0 update that brings the game into the state it should have been at release.
But how many years ago has the release been?
No way CD Project could have delayed the release that long.

The Teutonic Order and the Templar Order are unrelated.
The Templar Order was already abolished in the Middle Age while the Teutonic Order exists to this day.

Who said they were related? The Teutonic Order is better suited because it is German.

Makes it look like the Teutonic Order is just a branch of the Templars.

Ok. Thanks, I fixed it.

I hope so but

  1. The others can be easily mapped to irl factions (if Empire of Jade represents something) but not Jeanne d’Arc. Many people suggested Orleans but Orleans was not a major “French” faction (compared with Burgundy or Templars or Crusader States) and Jeanne was not “Duchess of Orleans or sth”. She did not show up as a representative of Orleans or command the “Orleans army” either. Other possible names are even less relevant.
  2. Age of Noob made a poll on what people think of those names. At least that’s what he knows about the civs. Maybe devs are trolling everyone including him, or he joins the trolling as well.

Not uncommon in gaming industry :smirk:

I’m thinking about Jerusalem, because this civ will definitely be in the story company. And it’s definitely based on France. This civ is already in the game. It could just be added to the multiplayer. Why devs invent another French civ about Orleans?

Well they showcased a hero unit (looks like female) with a hand cannon (pretty common in late Hundred Years War), so at least it would not be something totally unrelated to Jeanne.

They are trying to promote hero units as a change in design direction. So they likely wanted to make the focus of this new French civilization on Jeanne d’Arc.

I will be honest and say what I think is going on and why all of this is so bizarre. I think these four variant civilizations are the result of an entirely different development team, different to the ones who worked on Japanese and Byzantines. Their task was to put together new civilizations at low cost.

The reason I say this, is because the “Franks” (the crusaders) are very obviously featured in this expansion. So why then, did they decide to focus on Jeanne d’Arc instead? My answer is simple; the assets for her character already existed and were likely minimal effort to put together into a whole new civilization.

This, to me, seems to ring true with how the other civilizations appear. HRE’s variant using reskinned Knights, Landsknecht and Spearmen, for instance. If they were truly at liberty to make an actual sub-faction, there would be properly new assets involved. Instead, what we see is the following; Imagine if instead of Ghulams, Ghazi Raiders and the English King being added as new unique units, that they instead announced a new “variant” civilization that featured those units instead?

That is essentially what is happening, and this is likely being done by the exact same team that worked on the suppoused new unique units that were added in recent months.

One last comment of mine: the design shift into hero units is an active one to compensate for the fact that these variants will likely be underwhelming. Essentially, how do you make something feel different? add a mechanically out of place feature. They want the variants to feel different, so this is how they are compensating for it. Not a fan.

yes i think they are just teasing the names there is no way those would be the civ names

If they originally wanted to confuse the community. They could have done it intentionally.

Regarding how many in-game model fixes are still in the looooow priority, I don’t think they’ll intentionally make a full new model just to troll us…

This different development team can’t make a civ without the approval of the team leader. I understand that a bad team could make bad game mechanics. But the narrative director asserts the new civs.

They could have had a few extra models that were abandoned during the development process.

I do hope you are right, and your point makes sense.
What’s toxic are these 4 variant civ’s current names, I love this game so much I can’t believe it is true.

It makes however no sense to me, to officially update their website with the same names if they are just “testing” them or already have plans to change them in the future?

You update the website with the new civilizations once you 100% know the name for them and how they will work game-play wise etc.

Let’s hope that they change it, but I think it’s pretty much already decided by the team. The only thing that can change this, is for them to listen to the community feedback.
