Oh and Empire of Jade has changed to Zhu Xi’s Legacy!
Cant be helped… the civ is way centered around Joan of Arc… its beyond saving
Well atleast the other 3 civs seems interesting… I take everything back , Im ready for the dlc
I gave several examples above that still keep her name in it but are at least more consistent with how other things are named.
at least they can do sometihng like that only the abbasid name variant is good
Im actually glad they named this civ Jead D’arc… these dudes look like they came out of a pride parade XD
My thoughts on the finalized names:
Zhu Xi’s Legacy: it’s a quite surprising yet valid take. It still could sound like a faction name like “Neo-Confucians”. But at least the name is better than Empire of Jade (any name is better than that).
Ayyubids: good
Order of the Dragon: good
Jeanne d’Arc: now that it seems to be a moba civ, the name DOES fit. However like I said if you go down that path, you either end up with a civ with a lot of better alternative names, or a civ that fits the name but not the overall style of the game. Not sure if it is a good idea.
And I still prefer it if these variants are listed under the base civs not along with them.
Kkkkkkkkkkk yes I don’t like this color either XD , but the hero mechanics and variant civilizations look interesting!!
tbh pink was considered a masculine color until fairly recently in history
Ugly graphic as Always. No improvements. And i don’t like these colours.
I would like to know Who are the experts behind these choices
There is two things I am happy to lock in:
The Ayyubids are a great change! Praise Relic for that.
The Order of the Dragon is good enough, I say we leave it and not worry about this name any further.
Keep those two that’s fine, but let’s just modify the last two slightly.
I understand why you want Jeanne d’Arcs name to be slapped across the French Variant. That is FINE, but you can still improve the name by just calling it either Army or Jeanne d’Arc or Jeanne d’Arc’s Army.
Make this change and I think many people will b satisfied.
Zhu Xi’s Legacy while better than Empire of Jade, still feels weirdly inconsistent with the other names. It’s more historical, and I get you want to focus to be Zhu Xi, so I say we compromise and modify it to either Zhu Xi’s Song, or Zhu Xi’s Southern Song.
This more specifically attributes it to a Southern Song dynasty deeply influenced by Zhu Xi. And that would be fine. But Zhu Xi’s Legacy doesn’t sound like a people, place, or civilization
Zhu Xi’s Legacy: doesnt sound like a civ name it sound like a dlc to a asian game does this Zhu Xi had a civ under his control lets give it that name
Order of Dragon: doesnt sound like a civ name its weird its like you are playing some made up thing(I know its not made up but feels like that)
Jeanne d’Arc:A person name why cant they give the name of the duchy she belongs?
Ayyubids:Only making sense name at least 1 is saved
Ok, after reading the entire article I have mixed feelings. I am far more on board with the idea of hero characters than I was before from a thematic perspective, WAY MORE ON BOARD. They did a great job of explaining why the choices seemed so confusing at first. They are taking individual people, philosophies, or moments from history and basing a play style off of that. That’s really cool.
I still think there needs to be a better way to name these factions, or maybe we just need more of them. If there were 4 or 5 names of people in the civ selector is would feel less out of place and abrasive. I’m also a bit worried about how this will affect balance and the general way Age of Empires plays, but I’ll hold my opinion until we can play it.
Just for a reference:
In AOE3 several revolutions don’t have proper demonyms either. Like the French revolution (there is already the French civ), or the Napoleonic upgrade of it.
But they still tried to make them sound like a faction like “Revolutionary French” “Bonapartists” (a political party, thus a valid faction name).
Those are not 100% accurate (like Bonapartist is a term emerged after Napoleon’s first downfall), but are still intuitive enough and fit the theme.
So a more proper naming would be like:
Neo-Confucians
Jeanne d’Arc’s followers
Zhu Xi’s Legacy sounds like a rebel faction in China like yellow turbans, red turbans and boxer
I really hope these aren’t the final names now. God I mean Ayyubids is great, but now we’re at 1/4 fixed, basically. Zhu Xi’s Legacy isn’t straight up offensive any more but it’s still really bad in the exact way the community was complaining about over the whole weekend? Not to mention the fact that Jeanne D’Arc, one of the most criticised, hasn’t changed…
Relic/World’s Edge/whoever’s working on this game - please read the actual details of the feedback you’ve been given. It’s not just that we don’t like the names, there are specific reasons why, plus really good ideas to fix them, and you seem to have virtually ignored them (minus in the case of Ayyubids, well done for that).
Maybe your perception of “the most criticised” is incorrect?
From my perspective, “Empire of Jade” was the most criticised, followed by the “Sultan’s Army”. Jeanne had a mixture of feedback that isn’t even just about the name, so a rename wouldn’t even satisfy most of the complaints there.
I’m just glad the developers changed the ones folks were least happy with. Feels like we’re at “quibbling” level with Zhu Xi’s Legacy (and the Ayyubids), which is a lot better than before.
I said “one of the most criticised”. Why would your perception be any more correct than mine? I saw way more people complaining about Jeanne D’Arc than The Sultan’s Army.
Haha, well that’s exactly why I asked.
My reaction to civ variant names:
