The fact that you can play like this is absurd. It’s gotta be fixed. You couldn’t zoom half this far in the original game.
What is there to fix? Who are you tell others how zoomed in they should play? Just play on the zoom level you prefer and let other people play the game the way they want to. What a weird thing to complain about. I love how zoomed out you can play now, much more enjoyable.
There should be settings options to set your maximum zoom. Scrolling to zoom out is a muscle memory after 20 years of playing RTS, Mobas, MMORPGs, ARPGS, etc. Imagine if they swapped order of left and right mouse buttons: it might be better but very inconvenient for most people
Adding a setting to adjust the maximum zoom level is fine - as long as they allow players like me to play very zoomed out.
You developed the muscle memory to always zoom out all the way?
That doesn’t really make sense since every RTS has a different amount of scroll wheel rotation it needs.
I have been playing RTS with zoom since Empire Earth 1 (AoE1/2 didn’t have zoom) and I can’t relate to that at all.
Nothing wrong with you. It’s just an issue that I didn’t think people would have.
I fully agree with that. Options are always nice.
In AoE3DE the very far zoom is locked behind an option too.
Maybe instead of a hard limit there should be an option to make it snap to a certain zoom level. Then you have to scroll multiple clicks to get past that.
skadi its hilarious how you cant see the issue that the OP is posting about. ur also terminially online on these forums spouting bullshit as a giant noob. im sorry but hes right. Its a huge turnoff watching competitive streams and seeing ants.
Maybe if you stopped hanging upside down so much you’d reach better conclusions.
Zoomed out has its advantage of being able to see more of the field of battle which is why people zoom out but at the cost of harder to identify things and get enjoyment of the looks of units and buildings.
Nothing is perfect. I have heard complains about readability but they don’t want to zoom in more to more easily identify stuff so annoying.
There will be thousands of players checking out Retold for the first time and this is what they will see. This is disheartening. The first impression people have matters so much. This game isn’t free to play. People just aren’t going to bother trying it if this is what they see. They need to cap the zoom level to something close to the original game. The screenshot below makes the game look awful. I found it from some content creator with 70k subscribers, and then I later saw some other person with 1.5 million subscribers doing the same thing. I don’t know why some people refuse to acknowledge the danger in this.
i also remember drongo publicly complaining about aoe4 zoom back then, he even used 3 DE max zoom to make a point
play aoe4 then, idk what you’re trying to achieve here
this sounds like an issYOU
played games in this franchise for 18 years, only one i skipped was AOM, and now people like you make a non issue seem like an issue
AoM Retold is in beta. The zoom level can still and should be changed before launch. I am explaining the huge downside to keeping the current zoom level the same. Unfortunately, there are some players who don’t understand the reasoning behind this or ramifications of not changing it.
well some of us don’t need another aoe4 fiasco just for the sake of it
Go play Supreme Commander if you want to watch ants crawl around. I am here for in your face mythological warfare.
already got 2 and 3 DE to feed my needs, but since retold uses 3 DE’s engine it better support the same distances, and as already stated it’d be kinda dumb to limit ourselves to 480p max zoom out
just zoom in ig, why cap other people’s fun?
Read the entire thread and you will understand. It’s not complicated.
lets settle it this way: make it work like 3 DE, with dedicated option in settings, its not ON by default in 3 DE
and imo the default zoom out with ludicris off is still much further back than aoe4 is regardless of setting
I will summarize the issue here. The problem with the zoom level in Retold is multifaceted. If you allow players to zoom out far, it gives them an advantage while they are playing. So even if you don’t enjoy playing zoomed out, the game is basically forcing you to in order to stay competitive.
The other issue as you’ve seen me state repeatedly, is that it makes the game look confusing and unappealing to players unfamiliar with it. This exact thing happened to me this weekend. I am not making this up. I saw a video in my feed for a game called Northgard. So I clicked on the video and noticed that I liked the art style of the game. It was some kind of promotional video that was showing off some of the units. It was cartoony and stylized which I actually enjoy typically. I didn’t have a clue what Northgard was, other than it was an RTS, so I searched for some PvP matches. I opened a 1v1 video that said it had high ranked players in the title. I sat there and watched, and for whatever reason the person playing was pretty far zoomed out. I couldn’t really see what was going on, and I was looking all over the screen trying to understand how it was different from other rts games like Age of Empires. I watched for about a minute and I gave up. I just didn’t get it. All I wanted was to see what kind of RTS it was, and because this high ranked player was so far away from the action it became impossible for me to figure the basics of the units and gameplay.
I still do not know what exactly Northgard is or how it’s played. This is literally what happens to people. There are so many games and options nowadays all competing for your attention. I’ve heard good things about Northgard and I’ve seen before that it’s highly rated on steam. However, when I finally checked out the gameplay and I couldn’t tell what’s going on, perhaps partly due to everything being so small and zoomed out on the screen, I just gave up and moved on to some other video. Despite that, I personally don’t plan on giving up on the game that easily, I was going to go read Wikipedia about it and maybe try more videos.
Yet my point stands, there’s no developer who wants their game represented in such a way that the visuals are not clear or readable to players unfamiliar with the game. I understand that there are players who enjoy zooming out, I personally like doing it when I play the campaign or if I’m messing around in custom games sometimes, but I also realize the drawbacks to it. The combat in Retold is one of the most exciting aspects of the game with the mythological units and god powers firing off all over the battlefield. However, all of that visual spectacle is lost when people just play so far zoomed out. A lot of players of this game are veterans, and don’t fully realize the impact that a bad first impression might have on prospective players. AoM is more than just flashy graphics, it’s got an unforgettable campaign, endlessly replayable custom games, and a multiplayer scene with so much depth.
There’s too much at stake by allowing players the option to freely zoom out and play with ant-size armies.
