There’s ways to compensate for this. The charge is ona timer. And the charge only happens within 1 or 2 tiles of the target. Boosting speed from 0.9 to 1.2 or whatever for a brief period. It doesn’t suddenly cause militia to beat archers. Kts are way faster and they don’t reliably beat archers.
And even if it did somehow create the case where militia suddenly beats archers (they won’t) it will force players out of mono blobbing. ie either split the archers to draw chargers or use pikes to sap chargers.
maybe with pikes you have an argument but skirms straight up stink vs hussar. but the point is that the militia line is great against all 3 trash options, and that is one of the best things about it. in the super late game it can be very effective during trash wars.
why are you talking about militia gaining this ability? he was talking about serjeants.
best answer is eagle. Eagle still doesn’t outright defeat Crossbowman and you need nearly similar numbers. Even so I say 5-10s of sprint time will just work easily. But I guess it’s more suited for Unique Units mainly due to years of meta. But it’s upto gamedevs. 11
um what? eagles literally have 5 armor with upgrades, vs an attack of 7 for crossbows, meaning it takes 28 shots for eagles to die. yeah with some micro crossbows will win against a vastly inferior number of eagles but with anything even remotely close to equal investment, eagles beat the crap out of archers.
still feels gimmicky. we need LESS Gimmicks being added to this game, as is Sicilians and Burgundians are full of them and they aren’t exactly popular right now.
neither knights or eagles are some awesome counter to crossbows. if you have a low number of knights or eagles, yeah a superior number of crossbows can win, especially with good micro. but if you have anything approaching even equal resource fights you should win hands down.
and of course knights can pull it off with lower numbers then eagles can, they cost substantially more then eagles do.
he’s partly right. If you stack the xbows onto a single tile. You can beat eagles due to their low dps. Its insane sometimes

Gimmicks draw new customers. Even if they deter SOME old ones… Konnik is gimmicky. Same for cuman 2nd tc. That kind of stuff. Where to draw the line? Also 1 speed(after squires) jumping to 1.2 for 5sec(who says it needs to be affected by squires) isn’t on the level of chargelots in starcraft. I would hardly call it a gimmick

if you have enough archers to stack on a single tile and beat eagles, you were beating your opponent already.

difference is starcraft and warcraft is all about activated abilities. AoE2 is not
why is that a gimmick? they have terrible siege, they have subpar militia line, their monks are mediocre.
the only thing they have going for them outside of their archers is eagles.
The other day I was matched against a dude who played Ethiopian and thought just like that. Ended pretty badly for him.
Is it consistant? Like even the new gimmicks like coustillier charge are more consistant than that. Their charge always come back at the same time, always does the same base damage ect. With this mechanic on the other side you open a huge can of worms.
Since in an infantry army not every unit will be the same distance away from the enemy, would we end up with evey unit starting to dash in disorder? Or you try and make it coordinated but then which unit “decides” when to start dashing? And against what units should it count? Imagine a bunch of Goth infantry running in your eco that keep getting boosts because there are villagers everywhere.
And lastly, if you have the bullseye to judge two/one tiles around your infantry all the time then ig you won’t be among all the people who will download age of mandala mods for freakin’ infantry Does this sound right?
+40 HP isn’t a gimmick. Like it’s just a flat stat change you can’t get more basic than that. And having the best of something isn’t a gimmick, it’s just an upside.
Because it has nothing to do with mayans. There were other ways of doing it. But what’s done is done.
And that’s why we’re asking for a very small one. Not something huge like the chargelots.

Yeah and that’s why the intent is to keep it toned down. As i said 1 to 1.2 is such a small boost. I highly doubt giving sgts a quick charge every 30 sec is going to chase away that many players.
And even then it is based on realism. As opposed to a monk, which is gimmicky AF. But accepted since it has always existed
