[Potential Bug] Rocket Cart damage not affected by melee armor

When experimenting with rocket carts vs mangonels against high melee armor units, I noticed that rocket carts always do their full 40 melee (5x8) damage regardless of enemy melee armor. Mangonels, on the other hand, have the damage of their main projectile reduced by the enemy melee armor, as expected. It is unclear whether this is an intended mechanic or a bug, but is confusing given the stated 5 melee attack of the rocket cart projectile.

Here’s the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Fire a rocket cart at a unit with > 0 melee armor
  2. Inspect the damage done

The damage dealt to the unit would be one of the following:

  1. 5 - (melee armor) for each projectile, totaling 40 - 8*(melee armor)
  2. 5 - (melee armor) for main projectile, full damage for secondary projectiles, totaling 40 - (melee armor)

Or else the damage type for rocket cart projectiles should not be stated as melee in the UI

Screenshots show a 100 melee armor unit after a single volley from a mangonel and from a rocket cart, as well as the same for a post-imp Elite Teutonic Knight.

I’m squinting my eyes and still can’t make out anything in those pics of yours.

I just checked the data file and noticed that the combat ability for the rocket carts is set to 11 (ignore armor (1) + resist armor ignoring attack (2) + attack ground ability (8)).

The ignore armor part is the same as how Dravidian melee units work with the Wootz Steel technology, and would ignore the armor of most units except siege and buildings. Considering that the rocket cart is a replacement for mangonels, and 5x8 is equivalent to a mangonel’s damage, I think it’s quite likely that it’s intentional (though I do think it would be nice to make this clear in the unit’s description)

That’s on purpose. Using many tiny damage projectiles, they would suck against most units if they didn’t ignore armor and would not feel like mangonels.

I would hope so too. It won’t make sense that a Teutonic knight could tank 110 rockets.
