Proof Three Kingdoms was originally planned as a Chronicles/alternate mode

It has been discussed before, but the civs are actually much easier to rename to something sensible as they lack basically any 3K era specific anything besides the very unpopular heroes

Wei’s entire roster, castle and wonder is Xianbei themed, so they’d be ‘‘The Xianbei’’

Wu wouldnt need a rename but would need the unique tech renamed, but otherwise works fine as either Wuyue or Wu (as in the people rather the state that lasted 30 years).

Shu would be renamed Bai or perhaps something else if its desired

The renames would make them represent peoples rather than short lived states. Is it perfect? I dont think so. But it’d be a much better solution.

@Tyranno13, you did a great job with your discovery of hidden plans and files related to Microsoft as the leadership and the developers like Forgotten Empires concerning this “3 Kingdoms” DLC. Compliments on that.

Although I think it is good, as I have already described several times in 2 other topics the last days, that 5 new civs from the state of China will be coming into the game, however, I also share some weighty, critical points with you.

For example, it is really bad, that the Khitans and Tanguts were lumped together, even though both civs lived thousands of kilometers apart. I also have to strongly criticize, the lack of campaigns for the Khitans and Jurchens.

Further I am unhappy with the name of the civ, “Wei” According to what I have researched, they are based partly on the Mongolian Xianbei (Xianbei riders) and the Turkic “Tuoba” (Tiger cavalry), which emerged after the collapse of the “Xiongnu” empire. By the way, the “Huns” also where origin from there.

Overall, the “Wei” or “Northern Wei” are not a Sinitic speaking civ and in this relation therefore a non Chinese like civ, for which I was wrongly criticized here today.

The introduction of the “Wu” civ and the revision of the “previous Chinese” civ is more acceptable in my eyes.

This is indeed very sad. I don’t want to be pessimistic but this was a crucial turning point that might start the decline of Aoe2 DE. They should make the two different DLCs in 2025 not scrap the one and make a completely luckluster mess without even new voice lines for the civs!!!

I’m still in disbelief over the lack of voicelines. Even if one were to put all controversy aside, this shows a shocking rush job; either they never bothered recording the audio, or they didnt have it ready for the creator preview, which is meant to increase sales, no make people go ‘‘huh that looks cheaply made…’’

My only quibble is that we now have the khitans, and the xianbei, while mutli-ethnic, if it could be said were anything specific were proto/para mongolic, which accurately describes the khitans.

In short, they’re basically the same.

My preference would be to keep the Khitan name as it’s more of a ethno-cultural term than xianbei, but either way If we renamed the xianwei, we should probably rename the khitans to tanguts. We’d have to move the liao dao to khitans/xianbei.

A lot of words to say fixing khitanguts and xianwei will take a bit more than a name change, but simultaneously shouldn’t be a massive lift.

IDK exactly how best to tweak shu to some other reasonable alternative, and shu gives me concern regarding their naval focus.

Sorry, the next DLC is already booked

It looks like there was a mix-up between the Wei and Northern Wei when researching. Or there was such scant information on the Wei, that they just grabbed anything remotely sounding like them.

Also. Hera brought this up, a lot of the civs bonuses are really random and don’t seen to correlate with anything. Why do the Wu generate food with building construction? Why do Shu lumberjacks generate food? This is the issue with basing civs on tiny short-lived political states. There’s just not enough to go off of to make a coherent design.

Penguins are very advanced considering their birds. Fit right in. people will have fun with them

Funny thing is, there is already penguin unit audio in the game, so a penguin civ would probably be ahead of the current DLC civs by default

OMG, the penguin hero unit! This has all been a very long play by the devs lol.

Worth noting that the folder also contains “southestasia” flags that likewise went unused.

Also, an interesting bit I’ve just catched from last month’s sneak peak that I think went under among all the venting about TTK:

Source: A Sneak Peek at New Content Coming to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition - Age of Empires - World's Edge Studio

This section reads to me, as if a DLC after TTK is already planned, so who knows, maybe it’ll be either a SEA or proper Chinese DLC?

I’m not sure. That reads to me like a summery of what they just mentioned in the patch notes. PS5, DLC, update. Which they all mentioned next time.

Why? People can ask for a refund if their expectations were broken. For example, when AOE3DE was in pre-order, 5 Latin American countries had their price set wrong. When this was pointed out, Evangelos himself showed up in the topic and said “we messed up, anyone from those regions can ask for a refund and then buy the product for the right price”.

I think that if they put a warning in the DLC page, send message to insiders and and explain this in their social medias (discord, twitter, facebook and instagram), this information will spread and people will be able to refund before the DLC is released. Worst case scenario they will notice it when trying play for the first time, get angry andask for a refund anyways.

The orange banner is meant to be ‘‘South Asia’’, a term for the Indian Subcontinent. Its the Dynasties of India’s campaigns.

It is, and it proves banners means nothing. Because its all stylistic choice. And chinese one most likely stayed as old placeholder

Why would it be an old placeholder in this way? Peru is the tab for Three Kingdoms.

Brown banner - unused placeholder
Jade banner - currently used

Do you really think they would name an actual upcoming DLC project just “China”. No, it most like stayed from Peru development or they planned to swap old campigns

A good observation. These sentences also signify to me, that “3 Kingdoms” is only the 1 part of another East Asian respectively Chinese DLC. The 2 part will follow as the next DLC.

Several civs from northern East Asia could be brought into the game and they would be sufficiently independent.

I also expect a revision and split of the “Wei” into two civs, “Xianbei” and “Tuoba.” I am convinced, that players will enjoy playing the “Tuoba,” as they would then “be” the Far Eastern offshoot of the “Huns”.

The Xiongnu graphic is shows shortly before Christ and means, that a few hundred years later, the remnants of this empire, such as the turkic speaking “Tuoba,” emerged there.

If they added a Jurchen or Khitan campaign, it would be a lot more forgiving.

Besides, given their track record of “communication”, if they’re already trying to hype the next dlc before this one even comes out, I’m going to assume V&V2 is the last aoe2 dlc. Historically better understanding would have been achieved by taking what they say, and understanding the opposite.
