I played aoe4 beta and the graphics (especially proportions) are one of the reasons why i didnt buy the game. It sad, that devs dont care about this aspect enough
I think that too. It´s a shame. Devs seriously underestimate what it means to be visually appealing in a game.
Games like Manor Lords became famous exclusively for how they looked, because images circulated online and when people saw them, they thought, ‘What a beautiful game, what is it?’ and from there, they would learn more and take an interest in it.
For those who say that scale is not important. This was a request made by the SC-2 community to revert some changes. People simply liked the larger versions of these units. They made other adjustments accordingly, not the other way around like they did with AOE-4.
Other changes
Mothership
- The model size reverted (increased) to Patch 5.0.11 values.
Ultralisk
- The model size reverted (increased) to Patch 5.0.10 values.
Community Council Comment: We would like to continue following community feedback on the identity of these powerful units. The Mothership is back to its original power level, and increasing its size back to 5.0.11 fits this change perfectly. This adjustment may also slightly help in focus firing the unit in the Zerg versus Protoss matchup, where Abduct is no longer a counter. For the Ultralisk, the original idea of reducing its size was to minimize cases where it got stuck behind other allied units, an issue now resolved with the push priority change included in this patch.
StarCraft II 5.0.14 Patch Notes — StarCraft II — Blizzard News
My suggestion is to Increase the Building To fit the 3x3 area and Place props outside the building that can stay until some other buildings are placed over them. For example Byz Hippodrome draws the running track outside the building if it is built in an open area, which is amazing. It should be same for Stable. Stable building should take the entire 3x3 square (looking similar to AO2 stable) and the horse training area should be placed outside. that can be erased if some other budling is placed over it. Same should be for siege workshop , the building should take the 3x3 and put some wheels and bars outside the building.
Berkshire Can be increased in size to fit its size and place the moat outside being visible unless another building is placed adjacent to it. then the moat should be removed.
Yep, the building and unit proportion is just the tip of the iceberg.
And it is true that they only care about esports.
Moreover. they also think Mangudai and Khan’s Hunter have different skins…
I will say, it is not at all!
This just proves that the devs do not care about the history, appearance, visually unique units, and so on.
We will never know for sure to what extent not being visually appealing has harmed AoE4. But without a doubt, it has had an impact
There’s a difference between “could be better” and “isn’t good”. You’d be hard pressed to find many that consider it not good.
I think It could had have a certain role. I said many time that graphic and visuals are very important for immersion and for many people. In the opposite, developers would never asked in the latest survey all of these questions about graphic.
do you expect smth gud for a game that needed an rehauld since launch?
The overcomplicated design and lack of focus are also the reasons it looks out of proportions
Take Siege Workshop as an example, In the right half of the building, they squeezed 3 garage-like structures into such narrow space, While 1~2 is more than enough to make it stand out and for players to memorize.
The left half of the building and the banner in the center are supposed to be the main parts of the building, but both are not big and light enough to stand out.
Just some small changes and I think it’ll look a lot better.
However, I can still remember people complaining about the building being too small way before the game was even released, and yet years later, nothing changed. I doubt the design team even cares.
Could you rephrase this in a way so that it makes sense? I’m struggling to follow it.
I think this is misguided. The production buildings were meant to be one size bigger, 4x4 rather than 3x3. When that is taken into consideration, this scaling is decent. It only becomes horrendous when they get squished down to 3x3 (not alongside every other building), making wonky scaling on specific buildings.
Your suggestion would’ve been better had they been designed with 3x3 in mind. That just wasn’t the case.
Yes, they meant… but production buildings won´t have 4x4 size anymore (that size was reduced due to gameplay reasons)… so the best way would be redesing them.
AMAZING
Yes. I feel that the demands and criticism are no longer aimed at improving AOE-4, but rather at ensuring that the same errors are not applied in future releases. We have been complaining about this since we participated in the beta, where these forums had an incredible participation. Now there are only a handful of us left complaining about the same thing.
I don’t know if these improvements will be implemented, but the developers are listening to the feedback from this forum and the community, that’s for sure. Who knows? The improvement of graphics, proportions and textures is something that has been requested for a long time and would be very welcome with the future DLC.
It is also important to have the option of installing or not these improvements as was the case with the previous 4K package, as there are people who play this game with lower computing resources.
Love proposed fixes with enlargment of main buildings while maintaining 3x3 in-game. It’s soo doable and would look so much better. Fixes with doors looks also great.
That is true!
They only prepare change menus’ to esports pro players.
That is why we get balance changes mostly…
Bigger buildings look better and wish we could do, but would require the devs to implement a zoon that is even farther out than they and/or Microsoft have been willing to do in a third of a decade so far. Otherwise, the buildings will look like they are taking up even more of the view, or at least more in our faces
Until they’re willing to zoom out considerably more, I say no thanks for me ![]()
If zoom never changes, maybe you could just make it a mod for people to choose of they want. Speaking of zoom… is cam zoom moddable, I wonder? At least for unranked games
I have tried some rescaling mod that increases building size or reduces unit size. trust me, you dont want to play like this… it makes tracking units very hard
It was possible in AOE 2 and AOE 1 because they were isometric , but AOE 4 is 3d game
Good point. I was trying to picture before units getting obscured by the buildings more and thinking it might work, since it works in AoE2… but you’re right, the isometric projection (coupled with farther out zoom) helps it work there.
I’m not a fan of the 3D projection of AoE3 and AoE4, this is subconsciously one of the reasons. Everything toward the top fo the screen gets a lower and lower cam angle, which obscures more and more. And, stylistically, I don’t really like it nearly as much as AoE1/2’s view.
Note: I’ve read AoE2’s projection is actually called dimetric projection. See here, if curious:
“This [AoE2] is a dimetric projection (a special case of the axonometric projection (links to WikI)) with the horizontal axes at tan-1(0.5) ≈ 26.565° (an isomeric projection would have them at 30°, by the way) from the horizontal line. It’s commonly called “isometric projection”, but it isn’t exactly one.”
Here’s the page that describes:
If a new engine is used for AoE5, I hope it is capable of dimetric projection. Or, at the very least, isometric projection. I’ve read 3D engines are capable of doing so, or at least Unreal 5 is
