Prussian Revolution (letter to the developers)

Hello everyone, greetings. As you all know, new revolutions have just been added for the upcoming Baltic DLC; these can be tested in the game’s open beta, which most of you have already accessed. While there are significant changes and additions regarding these new revolts, there are also some bugs and historical inaccuracies. The purpose of this post is for us—the community—to address the minor issues found in this new content, focusing specifically on the Prussian revolution and its evolution into the German Confederates. We can then share our findings here so the developers can address these problems more quickly before the official launch.

For my part, I will share some points I’ve come across during my time playing the beta, and I hope that all of you will also share your comments regarding any bugs found or suggestions for improving the Prussian Revolt.

Alright, to start off, a big thank you to the developers for taking the time to return to supporting the game—and especially for delivering this new Baltic DLC. Even if it might not seem like it, we are very grateful and happy to have new content for AoE III again. I’d also like to share some suggestions and bugs I’ve noticed while playing the beta over the last few days.

The first errors I noticed occurred when advancing to the German Confederates after having already revolted as Prussia. I realized the “Citizens” Home City card is bugged; the text states that it allows you to ship settlers and enables the “March Revolution” ability at Town Centers, yet settlers and this ability are actually active from the start, without needing to ship the card. Furthermore, I believe that upon revolting as the German Confederates, settlers are supposed to transform into Revolutionaries, but this didn’t happen—or at least in my case, they remained settlers. This is one of the issues hopefully addressed before launch. Another problem I found involves a technology—I can’t recall if it was from the Capitol or the Prussian Academy—that upgrades militia into a new Prussian unit; the text is a bit vague regarding what it actually does, so you don’t really notice the effect, or you might overlook the fact that the Town Center militia are now different and have a new appearance. Those are the two errors I encountered; I don’t know if anyone else experienced a different issue or if others ran into the same ones I did.

Setting aside the issues and bugs in Revolución, I’d like to move on to another topic: the appearance of certain units. While most look great, there are some units that I believe really need a visual update.

Prussian Leib Guard:

The new Prussian Leib Guard Home City card is one of the best for the Prussian Revolution, as it vastly improves Prussian Musketeers and Grenadiers; however, there is a catch: while it transforms Musketeers into true Leib Musketeers, the same does not happen for Leib Grenadiers, who retain the appearance of the mercenary Giant Grenadiers. Honestly, I would love for the latter to get their iconic black coats and yellow pants for a more distinctly Prussian look—and why not tweak their stats a bit, too? That way, they wouldn’t look so much like a mercenary unit and would instead resemble a proper Grenadier unit from the Artillery Foundry or Barracks.

Prussian Offficer:
Another unit stuck in limbo is the pikeman, which retains its Renaissance appearance. This unit could well receive an update to look a bit more Prussian; perhaps they could be improved via the Prussian Leib Guard card, or an upgrade option could be enabled at the barracks after revolting to Prussia—there are many ways to give the pikemen a new look.

Imperial Units:
New appearances could also be added for certain Imperial units when revolting as Prussia and subsequently becoming the German Confederates. Below, I have attached some photos that could serve as a clear example of this.

Imperial Landwehr

Imperial Prussian Uhlan

Imperial Musketeer Leib

Imperial Prussian Fusilier

These are some nice ideas. Would be nice to see Austria too. I think it is doable via the Hungarian revolt. Make it 2 parts. Part 1 is Hungary, based heavily off the 1848 Revolution, rather than whatever it is now (military frontier?). The revolutionary would be the Honved. These second part would be the Compromise of 1867 and add Austrian Hungarian content, such as Kaiser Jaegers, Bosniaken infantry, etc. For Russia, Malta and Ottomans, Hungary could be replaced with Greece.

Yes, hopefully some improvements are implemented during and after the DLC launch.

The Germans civ represents the Holy Roman Empire, while revolting to Prussia mirrors how Prussia rose to challenge and eventually defeat the Habsburgs (Austria), who led the HRE. Then, revolting to the German Confederation reflects Prussia’s attempt to unify the German nation under its leadership.

I think the current approach is actually a pretty good solution. If players want to represent Austria instead, they can simply play the German civ without revolting to Prussia. That said, adding Austria as a separate revolt option for Germans would definitely make that distinction even clearer. Maybe you can still revolt to Hungary after you revolt to Austria.

I’d like Prussia to be available to Poland as well, given how it’s essentially Poland’s vassal that went rogue.

What do you think the Livonian revolt represents?

Earlier Teutonic Knights and the later the Duchy of Livonia? The Duchy of Prussia that broke off from Poland was long past its association with the Teutonic Order.
