You’ve got it all wrong, as someone who’s just dropped into this conversation with absolutely no context. I’m happy to catch you up to speed, and yes, I get a bit incisive. Here’s the context:

I, for one, am totally okay with a time penalty if we’re not going to fix the elo system by categorizing maps and separating their ratings. I think it’s a worse solution than simply fixing the problem by making the system better and more accurate, but at least it cuts down the abuse of what we’ve currently got.

They’d have to have separate rankings, which means resetting ELO.

You can’t have people at 2200 ELO who’ve never built a fishing ship and don’t know a water build.

I’ve made this point, and it’s been unpopular, so it’s not happening. They either need to split both rankings and queues into categories, or they need to punish queue dodging in the current system. Pick one.

If you can control what map you’re playing on, you must split the elo brackets. You can’t reasonably compare the skill of 2100 islands player compared to a 2100 arena player. Without splitting the brackets, you can have absolutely no clue of the skill of any player, regardless of rating, on any map, because who knows what he played to get there.

This is a problem with the current system and it’s only getting worse the longer we have preferred maps and map bans, this is inevitable, and it needs to be changed.

Which is why I’ve suggested that the arabia and arena only players should be moving to the lobby system and then petitioning DE to implement ELO tracking for public matches a-la voobly. To get a system they actually want instead of ruining the experience for the crowd of people who like the map variety in Matchmaking. Instead of what they’re doing now, which is continually quitting out of games that don’t fit their preferences and then stonewalling arguments to try to stop that behavior.

I don’t call this “who deserves it” because I don’t think someone who leaves a game deserves some sort of punishment for doing it. Don’t call it a punishment, because it isn’t. If someone leaves a game, either connection issue, leaving for a good reason, or leaving for no reason whatsoever, it’s a loss of time for the players the DC left behind. We’re trying to make the queue better for them not worse for the dropped player.

If it’s connection, a 15 minute time-out may likely expire before connection issues are sorted, and if they aren’t, it’s a safeguard for the next group being guaranteed that this won’t happen to them.

If they have to leave, or just decided in the middle of the game that they are done for now, a 15 minute timeout isn’t going to affect that at all. If they really need to leave, they’ll probably leave for more than that, and if they’re burned out for the day, that’d be some excellent burn recovery to return before that.

The only situation where a 15 minute timeout (the OP’s original suggestion) is really a setback is if you join a game, don’t like the settings, quit because of the settings, and re-queue immediately. In that case, it’s a setback for the one player that wants to play the one true map and a boon for the rest of the queue who doesn’t have to worry about being paired against that player for 15 minutes.

This isn’t intended to be a punishment. This is there so that the people who are in the queue, trying to have a nice game, have a better chance of actually having a game worth playing. If someone is consistently resetting the queue for an uncounted large number of people because they don’t get the map they want, the most reasonable path to solving that problem is taking them out of the queue for a bit to improve the quality of experience of the players they would otherwise be diminishing by doing so.

Unless you have a much better solution, that works cleanly within the matchmaking system and isn’t unlimited map bans, or something that legitimately can’t work but people think it can (using a personal banlist of players, etc.) this is the best way to ensure the players who are just trying to get a game, can get a game.

I’m not bullying anyone looking for alternatives. I’m clamping down on one reoccurring character who has refused to stop saying the exact same thing every single time they get the chance in one of these discussions and then castigating their opposition when they disagree.

The change did absolutely nothing to address Alt-F4, I hope you’re not delusional enough to think it did.

You seem to be laboring under the misunderstanding that Swaggy is arguing in good faith. You can stop doing so.

There must be a solution without punishment.
And currently ranked is 3/4 arabia anyways. It’s basically arabia ranked, not random map, what we get (if we don’t ban arabia) is an arabia elo.

You can find answers to literally everything you’ve said otherwise, including an answer to this tidbit, in my record-digging posts. As you can see, my position is pretty well fleshed out, I considered the Timeout system to be a solution to a current problem that has gotten out of hand whilst hoping for a much more effective long-term solution that gives the players what they actually want. You can stop now.

Meanwhile, Swaggy literally spent twenty posts of one of the oldest Alt-F4 threads making it clear that he believed (at the time) that ALT-F4 was totally cool, and that the system is broken, so we should be giving those people medals and giving them unlimited bans.

I would like unlimited bans, ideally. Then I’d agree there would no longer be excuses for Alt-F4
