Hello @robfbms
Are you using any third party antivirus?

Hello, I use Avast, Malwarebytes, and Windows 11 Defender.

Add the whole folder of the game to the exception list of all of them.

Thanks, I did it. Hopefully the issue won’t return.

Updating: the issue persists even after I added AOE2DE directory to exception list of my antiviruses. Now it also may happen any time when I’m with the Campaigns section open, before of after playing any campaign. Recently the error occurred twice right after I closed the Tariq ibn Ziyad campaign window.

Have you tried adding the Documents folder to the exception list of the antiviruses?

Isn’t this risky, because of the possibility of unintentionally downloading infected files (e.g. .docx files with malicious macros) to this folder?

Great catch. Try to see if the mods you have already downloaded are safe and then try the former. If so, we at least have the cause.

Btw, AoE2 only lets certain files to be uploaded in mods. No exe files, for example.
