Otto actually has some unique cannon crews, but I wish they would make other European civilizations based on this model.
For example, Dutch Blue Guards have amazing skins, but Dutch gun crews should look like Blue Guards. By the way, if the devs could replace their hats with tricorns, it would fit better with the timeline, what do you think?
Tricorns actually are less immersive for what artillery is. Most of the pieces are almost medieval. 18th century cannons, the ones from the era of Tricorns, are a far cry from falconets, culverins and what-have-you.
I can’t really picture the medieval cannon crews getting different skins per civ, I think this topic always comes up but… European armies weren’t that different from each other.
Well, using existing Royal Guards crews could be cool for each civ, like Tercio for spanish falconet, if it would historically correct. Probably not bc artillery crew shouldnt be very armored.
In fact, what I would like is more identity for cannon crews, for example reuse the red of the red tunics of british, the yellow of the carolean for swedes, the green of the rekruts for russian, the brown of the legionarios for portuguese, etc. And implement this for cannon crews. This could be more immersive, more accurate historically.
For example, in trying to give more identity to cannon crews by making them more different, you’re then committing to trying to make them more historically accurate, to which you hit a load of speed bumps…
For example the British may have used red tunics initially however they were more known to be using blue uniforms for their Royal Artillery companies later on, especially during the Napoleonics.
I don’t really like the idea of different skins for the exact same unit, but there are a lot of potential unique artillery units that could add some variety.
I always pictured the GeschwindstĂĽck as the perfect option for an Artillery Mercenary. It was a weird, highly specialized gimmick gun that only could be afforded by rich states. It was so weird to find out the Napoleon ended up being the actual artillery merc they actually did.
Partridge Mortar: I couldn’t find a lot of information about this one but it seems that there used to be a type of artillery shot in the past called "Partridges” which were clusters of bombs meant to be fired simultaneously from a multi barrelled cannon or mortar. The artillery shot got its name from the partridge bird due to resembling a covey of said bird in flight when these shells were fired.
Maybe the Partridge Mortar could replace the Mortar for the British.
Here is a sketch of a mortar designed to fire the partridge shot. The respective mortar is supposed to fire 14 bombs at once, 1 big bomb and 13 smaller ones.
No worries, it’s not like you are attending a private meeting. And as long as you are not necroing a very old post that hasn’t been kept alive by other users for some time, there shouldn’t be any problem with being late.
I think Artillery in general needs an model overhaul cause they’ve always been the most generic selection of units when it came to appearances which was alright in the old days but now with DE going all out with units looking historically accurate the artillery is starting to look its age. French cannons should look a little different from British cannons etc etc. Now they just look too stock imagey.
