Is this so hardcoded that it cannot be changed? I’m seriously asking as a layman.
I did some research. If I understood MattP correctly in this post, there’s no hard limit to civs and he should know it best as Prittchard worked on AoE 1 and 2 back at Ensemble ![]()

damn I hope this isn’t the case. bunch of mod will break cause of it
Actually, the Huns completely lived and died while the Roman Empire was still standing. So no, they didn’t have a history that continues into the Middle Ages.
Doesn’t pretty much ever DLC do that anyway?
The way datamods are handled kinda sux and it’s always going to brake after every update.
Well, tradition says that the (Western) Roman Empire fell in 476. If we consider some historical points of view, Fake news in ancient Rome: The invention of the fall in 476 AD.
We could consider that Rome (and Italy, even Gaul and Hispania) could be better in early VI century than early Vth century. The Roman Senate lasted after 476 AD, and the Ostrogothic kings (Theodoric) or Odoacer accepted obedience to the emperor of Constantinople.
So, I think that the concept of Medieval Era could be more flexible and relative, for example we could consider the beginning of Middle Ages since the Edict of Milan because it was the date of Christianity becoming a state religion but somewhat of Western Roman Empire remained until the Gothic Wars.
so far every DE DLC yes, but back with HD edition they released 2 separate datamod for it though I have no idea how it worked.
also combining data meaning loading bunch of unnecessary content at start of the game, though AOE1 isn’t all that big. honestly not sure what they’d do, someone that have access to beta will have to check if its still a single empires .dat
Theres still a limit to how creative you can be in adding new civilizations and wasying resources in adding Rome will also mean other more worthy civilizatiobs will have to wait to get added
HD has a “Original” datamod that resembles the 1.0c balance, including civs and maps. So no Magyars, Inca, Acropolis, Socotra etc
Imo in a game that features late antiquity, Romans are not wasted.
But we already have Romans lol. Also, it only includes the 5th century in terms of West Roman times
But it would making ancient mods a lot easier down the road if they would share the dataset.
Maybe they found some other technical solution for it.
The other question is can we make mods for the AoE1 data set? And if yes how does it work?
I assume you won’t pick the AoE1 mode by changing the dataset in the lobby as if it was a mod.
They should give it for free for those who own AOE1. It’s basically an update for their game, not our.
I agree, but is not going to happen
But at least we should get 50%off, but as I mentioned before is not going to happen.
I think making it cheaper is good enough, but the fact that theres no discount at all is ridiculous
The current civs themselves don’t come from the same time period in history. Some of them perished much earlier according to the history description in-game while some of them were born much later than others. This fact doesn’t bother me.
I’d still buy the DLC, if Romans is a civ playable on ranked ladder. Won’t buy it otherwise. There’s already some custom campaign where a modified version of Byzantines with these units is available.
Free is too much. They should have got a massive discount though. Especially on the bundle.
Yeah this was a major let down to me. I like the old DLC better with new civs being added to play
Same but I think AoE1 in AoE2s engine with better controls is a taste of what AoE1 Definitive Edition should have been.
Give me a Nepali civ and ill donate 1000 to the devs
Dude, are u for real? You can already play CELTS vs japanese!
Celts are 1000 years older then freakin romans.
You already had in real life samurais with katanas vs guns, nothing can be strange in adding Romans as they were missing acording to the time period of the game.
