'Return of Rome' Teaser! šŸ“½ āš”

On the steam page its written "Enjoy the improvements from Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition within the gameplay of the classic Age of Empires:

  • Gates
  • Formations
  • Trade carts
  • Improved path finding
  • User interface improvements
  • Visual enhancements
  • Observer mode
  • Improved artificial intelligence of computer opponents

What does that mean? can we play AoE 1 campaigns with these additions?

Almost no new content from AOE2, very disappointed

The Romans are in base AoE2. That’s what it means.

path finding in aoe2… maybe it is better than aoe1 but its pretty bad over here too

visual maybe subjective but with AOE1DE had a x4 graphics while 2DE only has x2 I would argue that first game has better visual in unit sprite details.

UI… guess both game lags when theres 1 player lagging the game, have no clue why UI would also lag with lagger but it is what it is I guess

If they would make UI like in AoE 2 it would be a tremendous improvement.

Is it long till they release the Romans bonuses?

Yeah, I’m happy for a new civ… but just one civ isn’t a lot…

This is even worse when you think that you have campaigns where you have etruscan, samnites, iberians, britons, gauls and germans represented by civs that doesn’t even came from the same continent…

There are 17 civs available in the DLC. For one batch that’s already a mindblowing number just when it comes to balancing and polishing.
Who is missing? They should invent civilizations, nations and countries to pump up the numbers?
This isn’t Elder Scrolls.

16 of the 17 civs are the civs already present in rise of rome, sure they had a general rework so it’s not just a copy paste, but still it’s actually just 1 new civ…

Second, I don’t mind the addition of the viets, but it bothers me that there are still some big civs missing from the game.

This is literally the point of this DLC:
Return of Rome , a completely new type of expansion pack which brings Age of Empires, the title that started it all, into Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
They are bringing AoE1 civs to 2DE engine because that’s the point of this DLC. What are you complaining about?
Age of Empires series is, relative to other strategies, fairly grounded in history. Maybe you didn’t see it the first time so let me repeat my question: what civilization is missing? They should introduce some irrelevant groups, barely known and/or interesting city-states, things just loosely based in history to make you feel better about bullet point regarding ā€˜brand new’ civs?

17 is a crazy number. Who is missing?
You’re criticizing the expansion based on your personal expectations that, afaik, are not backed up by any official statements and even hints about this expansion.

You either didn’t understand what I said and what the DLC brings or you are just a troll…

Either way, there I don’t see any problem by being disappointed because I had different expectations and I see even less of a problem to politely share my opinions on a dedicated forum…

Gauls, germans, etruscan, iberians, goths are irrelevants and barely knew city states? Go tell that to asterix and obelix… :joy:

I guarantee you Indian civs will be added later this year in an upcoming DLC. Hopefully after that, Celtic civs.

I don’t feel like buying the same game twice though. Please give us AoEDE owners a discount!

And I responded in a polite way, stating that you have bizarre expectations based on nothing but your imagination and are criticizing the content of this expansion, despite it being exactly what it’s advertised to be and what the goal of this project was from the beginning.
If you view anyone that questions what you say as a ā€˜troll’. Well, very interesting behavior.

Who are you quoting? I didn’t say anything about those. Why are you making stuff up?
This expansion is bringing ancient empires from AoE1 game on a newer and more flexible engine.

Age of Empires I is a game focused on a period from Stone Age to Iron Age, with a strong emphasis on the earlier centuries from that period.
What you’re listing fits an early-medieval-themed DLC for Age of Kings. Not an expansion of the formula from the first installment, focused on civilizations older even by 1500-2500 years.
Lac Viet is already threading close to the end (700 BC - 100 AD) and you want to bring Gauls as companions to
Egyptians or Sumerians?
And what are ā€˜Germans’ for Christ’s sake?!
Germans as a distinct ethnic group started separating and forming from Frankish Empire in like ~900-1000AD. This game is not called ā€˜Age of unorganized tribes’. What are you even talking about.

Age of Empires I is a game where you throw spears at crocodiles, smack people on the head with big wooden clubs, and ride chariots. Germans? Why not Australians while we’re at it?

How would they gonna sell DLC for RoR though?
That would be called: DLC for a DLC? since RoR is a DLC for AOE2DE.

AoE2 players probadly wouldn’t buy those DLC if it doesn’t bring any AoE2 content

Right, I forgot about Indians too. Anyway it’s not that I’m crying, I didn’t even expected new civs…

It’s that when I read ā€œ17 old and new civsā€ and then realized that in reality it was just 1 nrlew civ, I was disappointed… I still hope for more DLCs of course.

Myself… when I said that I was disappointed because I when I read new civs, I hoped for more than 1, after all every DLC up to now introduced at least 2 new civs, and I was waiting some for a long time…

Gauls are an ethnic group for the medioeval ages…? If gauls cannot find its place in the time period neither rome should…

Well I have nothing to add, except that the germanii were the peoples loving beyond the rhine at the time of cesar, what people commonly call ā€œbarbariansā€.

Just because they lack an political unity when confronted with rome it doesn’t mean that their culture were less prosperous, otherwise cesar wouldn’t bother to conquer gaul, britan and part of germany.

There was no united Spain or Italy either, the ā€œunorganized tribesā€ argument really doesn’t hold.

I think it will depend on how well RoR sells. Obviously people who refuse to buy this one dlc wouldn’t spend money on its expensions, but I don’t think the entirety of the AoE2 playerbase will be AoE2 only, and many AoE1 players will probably migrate here. Not mentioning unlikely but possible new players.
And yes, it would be dlc for dlc, but it’s not an unseen thing in the video game industry. Look at Total War Warhammer…

Neither were there the Phoenicians. Even Sumerians is a stretch as they were mainly city states.

Yamato as a political concept starts at 4th century.

Gauls invaded Rome when Rome was still trivial. They are at least not more of a stretch than Romans.

The Gauls also had interactions with the Greeks (they even used the greek alphabet before Caesar), and some settled in Anatolia, giving Galatia its name.
