Revamp the Aztec victory icons and citadels

I think the Aztec victory icons should be redesigned or “completed”; it’s no secret that the Aztecs were released—or at least appear to have been released—in an unfinished state.

Perhaps I’m the only one who cares, but looking at the icons—where previously each one featured a symbol representing a specific god—the Aztec ones are bland and derivative. The icons, and the game’s art style in general, are too beautiful to leave in this state; just compare them to the others (though I admit the Zeus icon is a bit simplistic).

The Huitzilopochtli icon is clearly a copy of the Isis one, while the Quetzalcoatl icon could be more complex—incorporating wind motifs, for instance. As for the Tezcatlipoca icon, it is simply unfinished; not only does it lack references to his mirror or the smoke, but it consists merely of jaguar heads with no further detail. I believe they could be remade or finished; at this stage, it certainly wouldn’t hurt.

I’m not saying they need to be incredibly complex—I’ve seen some very stylized ones—but take Shennong’s: it’s very simple, yet it’s more representative of him. And sure, regarding Huitzilopochtli, even though the concept is similar to Isis’s, it’s distinct enough. Still, I would have included Xiuhcoatl and changed the arms to something else—or just left them out. Again, Quetzalcoatl’s icon is missing something, and Huitzilopochtli’s is just ridiculous; it clearly looks unfinished. It’s not just that I arbitrarily feel it lacks representative elements; the icon itself is smaller than the others. It looks as if the empty space was designed for something else, but they ran out of time and left it half-done. We live in the internet age; while missing a deadline is understandable, this isn’t the 90s where only the disc version existed. If something goes wrong or is left incomplete, they can finish it later and release it in an update. Huitzilopochtli’s icon is clearly a copy of Isis’s, while Quetzalcoatl’s could be more complex—perhaps featuring wind waves—and Tezcatlipoca’s is simply unfinished; I mean, it’s not just that it lacks references to his mirror or the smoke, but that it consists solely of jaguar heads without further detail. I think they could remake or finish them; at this stage, it wouldn’t hurt.

Put some love into it.

Also, their citadel should be redesigned so it isn’t just a copy of the Egyptian one.

P.S.: Regarding the Spanish localization, the descriptions for some Chinese passive abilities are outdated.
In Spanish, Heracles is named Hercules (the Latin form), meaning there is an error where the Roman name is used instead of the Greek one.

P.S. 2: I’m still hoping for a rebalance in favor of the Aztecs; they still aren’t quite working right. Maybe make the villagers gather a bit more or cost less, because their early game is far too slow compared to the others.

I don’t see any problem with them to be honest.

I wouldn’t go so far as to call them the world’s biggest problems, but I feel at least compared to the others that they lack a bit of polish and care. This is especially true for Tezca’s emblem, though I can certainly see why someone like you might like them; they are genuinely nice after all. It might just be me being overly particular, but they strike me as unfinished or capable of improvement.
To my mind, Quetz’s emblem is missing wind (and maybe maize), while Tezca’s is missing smoke and mirrors. That said, they are very beautiful. I love the Retold’s victory crests, it’s just that the Aztec ones could be better. Tezca, in particular, is such a charismatic villain that having such a simple emblem feels underwhelming (again, it just seems half-baked to me).

That said, the Aztec Citadel was definitely just a copy-paste job from the Egyptian one.

To be fair, the shape of all original 4 Citadels are identical. They just changed the wall texture and roof. The similarity between Aztecs and Egyptians come from the coloring and flat rooftops. It’s not exact copy paste. You can see different stone texture, additional trimming halfway at the building and base, additional staircase at the entrance, different windows, vegetation growing etc. That being said, maybe they could have introduced tapered angle to walls a little to make it look like steep Aztec pyramids.

  1. I don’t agree. Just because both have a flat roof doesn’t make them the same. They have a clearly different shape. Also all other Citadels looks similar just having the regional roof types.
  2. You can only get this building though an Egyptian god power so what is the harm in it looking similar to the original Egyptian one. Not like the Healing Spring has different appearance for other pantheons.

There is a mode where you can only have one center, and the objective is to destroy the enemy’s.
In that mode, every player has a citadel. They decided to give each one unique architecture—except for the Aztecs. While the other pantheons have the same base structure but distinct architectural details, the Aztec version is practically identical to the others, save for some plants on the roof.

The thing is, they put in that effort for all the previous pantheons: the buildings share the same base structure but have enough differences to stand apart. Why not for the Aztecs? Although, in their defense, the Mythic Age version is at least a little, just a tiny bit more distinct.

What bothers me is that, for the past few months, the game seems to be operating on a “minimum effort” philosophy. Examples include Demeter’s alternate portrait which just features glowing eyes, or the Amazons, who are literally just Hippolyta. It’s the kind of thing that makes you think, “Either do it right, or don’t do it at all.”

I do agree on the Amazons but I don’t agree on the Citadel. Aztec and Egyptian buildings just have flat roofs because of similar climate. Of course they look kinda similar.

One they add new civs like Celts, Roman, Babylonians and so one there will be more civs with Citadels that look similar to existing ones because there are only so many way you can build a house and make a roof.

Yes, it’s unfair to say they are copy paste

You’re right about that.

I still think they won’t include the romans; I know a lot of people dislike this argument, but they were ruled out in favor of the atlanteans back in 2003, and in retold, they actually gave the atlantean aesthetic a more roman look (it surprises me they didn’t rename the destroyers and fanatics to retiarius and dimachaerus, respectively).

Personally, I’d love to see pre-Islamic Arabs the polytheistic ones so we could have Bahamut, Kujata, and djinns.

That, and having them use a mythological civilization or city to make things up like with the atlanteans; I vote for Hyperborea.

Maybe I’m just frustrated by the “minimal effort” approach they’ve shown in certain areas—though I do want to be understanding toward the developers. The AoE3 DLC took us all by surprise; to get to the point where they could show what they’ve shown, they must have been working on it for quite a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Retold developers are the same ones working on the AoE3 DLC, especially given the wave of layoffs at Microsoft in recent months (which is only going to increase). They’re likely swamped with work and forced to prioritize.

The good news is that AoE seems to be one of those franchises actually generating real profit for Microsoft Games/Xbox. So, we can reasonably expect them to keep releasing more and more factions for Age 2, 3, 4, and Retold (though I believe Relic is the one handling Age 4).

Jojo moment.
I, Giorno Giovanna, have a dream: that Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds gets a remake and becomes known to the general public instead of remaining a niche title (it might stay niche, but at least people will stop thinking it’s a mod).

Along with Retold, it was my favorite game in the series, even though technically it isn’t part of the family since it wasn’t made by Ensemble or Microsoft.

Sorry, I started rambling a bit there.

Yes, certainly in the Mythic Age they become even more distinct, but I still insist they are far too similar; even allowing for the fact that all citadels share the same basic structure, this one at least in my view sits right on that borderline: too similar not to be a copy, yet too different to actually be one.

In the mythic age, that is before that stage, they really do seem very much alike to me.
