It actually took ~10 years of development and updates for aoe2 to “revive” and become an overall polished game with tons of playable contents as it is now. HD (which was actually how it all started) was not as popular as the later DE, and there are three major expansions between those two.
For aoe3 it has been just a little more than one year since the revival. So there is clearly much potential.

It seems to me that there is a pattern between their DLCs. It starts first with a single-civilization DLC (so far post-colonial using a “federal” age-up system) and then a major DLC with at least two new civilizations. I would suspect that following Mexico the next big thing is going to be a major multi-civ DLC focusing on another geographic area.
I am still holding out that Morocco might get dropped along the way, maybe as a little free/discounted bonus for those who bought the African Royals (as if I recall, Morocco was intended to be a third addition but was cut). Otherwise, I still want to see a Middle East civilization adds the Persians and perhaps Oman and Egypt.
