Rome at War (Rome ad Bellum) vs Return of Rome

Return of Rome isn’t out yet but from the current information it seems it wants to be a port of AoE1 into AoE2, rather than bringing the ancient era of AoE1 into AoE2.

Not many people are interested in AoE1, except maybe in Vietnam, and for those that are interested in the ancient era, Rome at War brings the ancient era’s factions into AoE2’s playstyle with a twist.

When I first heard about the DLC Return of Rome I thought that either:

  • Rome at War would become obsolete.
  • AoE2 devs would hire Rome at War modders and import the mod in the official game as a DLC.

That didn’t happen. So now I wonder, if I want an experience closer to AoE2, what’s the reason of buying the Return of Rome DLC when I already have the free mod Rome at War?

If anything, now I think Return of Rome would be obsolete (except in Vietnam) because Rome at War exists.

I have no idea why they didn’t adapted the AoE 1 into AoE 2. It will be a weird hybrid in the way they are doing.

Rome at War mod give the entire content of Aoe 1?

… What?
Maybe I need sleep, but I’m not sure I understand the distinction you’re trying to make.

57 now :clinking_glasses: :confetti_ball: :tada:, 43 more to go before the release, please keep it with new discussions about the Roman DLC, we should hit 100 before the release.

Hopefully they give bettter mod support so that Rome ad Bellum can become even better. Things like:

  • Ability to edit add/subtract UU icons to UI menu.
  • Ability to make futureavailableunits.json funtional in mod directory.
  • Ability to make civTechTree.json functional in mod directory.
  • Ability to edit Civ Jingle Music.
  • Ability to edit SLD files or make SMX layers work properly.
  • Ability to add new Civ Slots (this will be the best feature ever).

Romea ad Bellum takes part in a different time then AoE1 and AoE2, it sits between both games.
The mod starts with the Iron Age, the Age AoE1 ends in.

The mod will likely greatly benefit from having all the AoE1 assets in the game now, so they don’t have to bundle them with their mod anymore.

But I agree that they should hire them and make it an official game mode!
Maybe with a different name that doesn’t have Rome in it to reduce confusion.

RoR was always meant as a AoE1 port into AoE2.

For the players this means a lot of AoE2 QoL features become available for AoE1, which should improve the game play.

For the devs this means they only have to maintain 1 game (AoE2), instead of 2 games. So it will be cheaper, and less resource intensive. So they can focus more on creating new content.
