I don’t think it’s a bug… hasn’t it always been like this? Or at least with AoE2:HD and before? … but I think with DE, too. That’s my recollection anyways.

I remember it most with Markets, as I’m pretty sure I’ve always had to wait for them to be built before I can target another market to trade with. I prefer having to wait until structure is complete before setting gather points, actually.

It’s one of those minor things that when combined with a lot of other minor things, they add up to help differentiate skill levels, multi-tasking abilities, and speed between players. It’s one less semi-automated thing, as you have to remember to go back and specify it when construction is complete and/or when you go back to queue units up.

I think it should not let you put a gather point before the building is complete in the same way and for the same reason that you can’t start queuing up units or techs before its complete: because the building isn’t yet in operation. It helps to keep some semblance of real worldness and less gamey or less mobile gamey.

Some would probably see it as a QoL improvement. In some respects it is. But I see it as yet one more step toward making the game less difficult, bringing yet one more macro crutch at the expense of micro. AoE2 has always been pretty micro and relied on paying attention to little details sometimes at disparate times. I like it that way. If I can just specify everything I need to do at the exact moment I build something, and remove 90% of the baby-sitting in the game, then the game just becomes a mediocre ‘meh’ to me.

The game has made enough QoL improvements at this point (a ton of them, actually)… I don’t think this one is needed. Judging by your screenshot, I see you’ve already adopted at least three QoL improvements (terrain grid, tower range indicator, and vibrant building icon to see what it is while it’s being built), so I can see why you’d be of the mindset to want more (and probably an endless faucet of them?). I think automation is more fitting for AoE3 (and other games in the franchise that draw inspiration from AoE3 or mobile games).

EDIT: Sorry, didn’t see until after posting this was from 5 months back. The forum linked to your thread at the bottom of the page for me to click and read. Still, I think a counter-point to your point is okay, lest the devs think this is an actual bug that everyone universally thinks needs fixing.
