Maybe we can create a shield wall technology who work only for unit wearing a shield.
This will be a feudal age technology available in forge.
Many civilizations used this tactic. This is reflected by the Hoplite bonus for example.
This technology can be available for the following civilizations (and work only for unit in parenthesis) :
Celts (Woad Raider)
Danes (Jomsviking)
Goth (Huskarl)
Italians (Condottiero, Genoese crossbowmen)
Persians (militia line)
Romans (militia line / Legionary)
Shu (White Feather Guard)
Sicilians (Serjeant)
Vikings (Berserker)
All (skirmisher)
Maybe some civilizations can have for civilization bonus than shieldwall affect the skirmisher (Romans for example)
For the Persian I read on Wikipedia shield wall article that the Daylamites used this tactic in middle age and this can be good for their weak militia line (and the persian have not militia line wearing two handed sword).
Also some african civilizations used this tactic, maybe an impi warrior UU can used this technology ?
Saxons
The Saxon UT is good but come only in imperial age. Maybe we can give this new technology to the Saxon in feudal age and lower the bonus of the Saxon UT in imperial age ?
Their civilization bonus is that this UT work for all infantry, not only those wearing a shield.
Chronicle
In Chronicle all the infantry have a shield so the militia and spearmen line can use this technolgy. For the hoplite they stay at the current stage (free armor bonus). Many infantry UU and sklrmisher call also use this technolgy.
“Unique” Technologies named after fairly common things are just a thing in this game, no need to overthink it unless we want half of the civs suddenly getting access to Shield Wall, Counterweights, Stirrups, Hill Forts, Torsion Engines, Herbalism, Recurve Bow…
It could be a generic thing for infantry if devs really wanted to… you can limit it to +1/1 for normal civs while saxon with the UT could get their current +3/+3 (I think that’s the cap, I haven’t use the UT of saxons so I may be wrong)
I was thinking the same today. If I could revert the time, I’d change Gambeson with Shield Wall but keep the max at +2/+2. But now it is better to leave them alone.
What if Gambeson was a 1/1 instead of just 1 pierce? Would it be broken? At that point I’d almost want to extend its access to Champis so they can be more bulky and shove it on some of those civs
It would have been an amazing feudal tech .. maybe a tech than barracks could develop Even further… Like shieldwall gives a 1/1 cap, squares gives You 2/2 cap and pike and shot 3/3 and gives the bonus also for hc
I still would like to see a regional “Shieldman” trash unit in the barracks.
Not only because of the historic accuracy, but also because it could solve the Skirmisher strategic bottleneck issue - and the general “Infantry sucks vs Archers if they don’t have an absurdly OP anti-archer UU like the huskarl” issue.
