I’ve tried many city-building titles, and only two stand out that combine progressive eras, landscape design as the core, and light economic management: Manor Lords and the Anno series.
That’s why I want to discuss with all AoE players: Microsoft could develop a spin-off city-building game based on the Age of Empires IP, removing traditional RTS combat mechanics entirely.
Core Design Concepts of This Proposed Game
Core gameplay priority: Free terrain landscaping and district urban planning come first, with economic management as a secondary feature. There are no mandatory large-scale wars, focusing on relaxed construction and visual aesthetics.
Age of Empires already has a polished era progression system that can be adapted into a full development line: Dark Age → Feudal Age → Castle Age → Imperial Age.
Building visuals will update entirely as civilizations advance, and partial old-town renovations are supported to refresh the look of existing districts.
Dozens of civilization-exclusive buildings and unique wonders with distinct art styles provide abundant landscaping assets, so cities built with different civilizations will look vastly different.
The iconic four-resource system (wood, food, stone, gold) translates perfectly into streamlined light management without excessive complexity. Players only need to handle population demands, industrial zones, inland trade and territorial taxation. No forced army training or battles—you can fully focus on designing streets, city walls, farmlands and scenic layouts.
The Age of Empires community already has a huge group of players who love peaceful base-building, giving this spin-off a solid fanbase and great potential for future DLC updates.
It will center on large-scale metropolis planning, setting it apart from Manor Lords and the Anno series. Minor defensive skirmishes can also be included to retain AoE’s signature wall and fortress construction gameplay.
