'Some' disappointment with the new Chinese MUs

Maybe I’ve just built them up in my head too much, but there is some disappointment with the new Chinese MUs. I will say that there uniqueness and special abilities get top marks.

However, my disappointment mostly lies with their sound design. The original MU unit sounded great. They had very distinctive sounds, which is probably why they didn’t redo the sounds. (Okay, maybe wadjet sounded a bit weird). They couldn’t be topped. But the new MUs are totally unremarkable in sound design. They all sound basically the same, have limited variations for each MU and are pretty quiet. Just a collection of grunts and roars. I think the TotD MUs had more distinctive sound design.

Smaller disappointment is some animations. Not a huge issue here, but some animations are just weird. WTH is up with Qilin attack animation, it looks like its at a rock concert. And taotie not having a swallow animation isn’t epic. And the lack of bored animation (which add a lot of flavour) also seems a bit lacklustre compare to the original MUs.

But if this is the worst thing I have to complain about then I guess we are okay

I definitely agree that the taotie needs a swallow animation.

I agree with that point totally.

Their models are all great.
Animations are overall great too! (really happy with that azure dragon movement and how they animated the toggle animation of Qiongqi)

But they all do seem too quiet and sometimes they feel too similar in sound design or as you say “unremarkable”.

Old sounds for myth units sometimes were/are a bit silly (Wadjet) or too loud (Phoenix). But they were/are all remarkable and distinct from each other.

I totally understand that a voice/sound for Hundun is hard to make tho.

About the idle animation tho I think they are pretty good/solid and have sometimes nice details.

About the swallow animation… for me there are more important things than this. I think the movement of the head and jaws with the spark is where it bites/swallows is enough for readability and again I think there are more important things and animations personally. Like for example the sounds.

I immediately caught myself making sounds for the myth units when I payed the m the first time like a loud growl for Qiongqi or a mixed sound between a horse and a “stereotypical dragon sound” for Qilin. ^^

Another thing which I would like to see more i general and is for me more important are visible upgrades for myth units and upgrades for myth units in general. I like the visual feel progress (even maybe for Medusa it’s a bit too much with their completely golden snakes on her head and I am still not sure how I personally feel about the Sphinx heads beside the original one even I value the viability of the upgrades very much)

Yes, I do like that they stated that one mission was to make upgraded MUs visually distinct. However, in saying that, they do seem to have forgotten to do that for several of them.
