Some visual mods only work "locally", but not through subscription

Game Version:

  • Platform (Steam)

Issue:

See for example [No terrain blending] mod, if you subscribe to it, it doesn’t make any changes. But if you copy the files it has and manually replace with your ones inside game folder the mod works.
Recently happens to me the same when I tried to make new mods, they work for me, but they won’t work if I submit them to workshop, same reason. Some file modifications aren’t working.

In my case I tried to do “No butterflies” visual mod replacing the file “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\AoE2DE\resources_common\particles\textures\atlases\butterflies.dds”.
It works for me, but It won’t work for subscribers, the same way as “No terrain blending”.

These folders are not possible for any modifications, only work “locally”:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\AoE2DE\resources_common\terrain\blends”
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\AoE2DE\resources_common\terrain\masks”

I experienced the same problem with my “classic cursors” (.cur) and “no hero glow” (.dds) mod. Looks like the mod manager ignores .dds or .cur (mouse cursor) files in general.

Same with Palette Files (.pal) in the “Palettes” folder.

Also the PNG files in the Icons folder in both “Menu” & “Ingame” from the widgetui graphics are also not supported through mod subscriptions.

I’m bumping this because I’m having the same problem. Subscribing to a mod that changes terrain blending (e.g. the No Terrain Blending mod mentioned in Guaymallen’s post) does nothing – even if I restart the game after enabling it (which I usually have to do for terrain mods), the terrain blending is unchanged. I also can’t get it to work using a local mod, i.e. by copying the mod from the subscribed to local folder.

This seems like an easy fix, I wonder if it slipped under the hood or is being tracked by the devs? Extremely easy to reproduce too

Hey guys,

Is this still happening for everyone? which mods are being used?
Also tried verifying game files and reinstalling these mods?

Is it still the case that replacing the original files with the mod files does make the it work?

These questions will help us find and reproduce the issue!

Is this still happening for everyone?

Idk. It is happening to me.

which mods are being used?

None which touch the blends file to the best of my knowledge. Except of course the “No terrain blending” mod, which is the one not working correctly

Also tried verifying game files and reinstalling these mods?

no

Is it still the case that replacing the original files with the mod files does make the it work?

yes

Thanks for your comment!

I have been able to reproduce this issue and it is being tracked internally
