EDIT: This buff was scrapped, and revealed to be a typo in the early Spanish release.
News: Squires is being buffed from +10% to +15% this November patch.
What does the community feel about this specific change, basically the biggest balance change of the whole Anniversary Update (apart from the nerf which will bury the Indians underground) ?
I believe this change will only work in favor of the only competitively viable Infantry (Dark/Feudal is before Squires, not part of discussion), Eagle Warriors, Huskarls and Pikemen/Halberdiers.
Therefore I am naturally confused as to why the balance team thought buffing these two unit lines, Eagle Warriors and Halberdiers was absolutely necessary. It’s not as if EW and Pikemen/Halbs are never seen in gameplay, or needed any more help to do their job. These two are the most commonly used and also the most cost effective units of all time.
So I believe a change which would actually increase the use of non-competitively viable Infantry units like LS and Infantry UUs would have been much better.
Let us discuss.
In short: Why did the devs think a change which principally only increases the already existing power of Eagle Warriors, Huskarls and Pikemen/Halberdiers was absolutely essential for the metagame?
EDIT: LOL to those who think this patch is a nerf to Goths with the Loom instant research.
Don’t be so hopeful. Our hopes and desires with regards to balance changes have been crushed far too many times now for us to hoping for something like that on the eve of an update.
As of now, all we can say is that Eagle Warriors, Halberdiers and Goth spam’s power has increased substantially.
Especially on the lower ladder, now Goth spam is going to be truly unstoppable.

The real question is: Why did the devs think buffing Halberdiers, Eagle Warriors and Goth Spam was far more necessary than fixing Steppe Lancers, Siege Towers and so on from Tech Tree decorators to units actually worth considering?
I don’t think I agree here: it’s primarily increasing the viability of infantry relative to other classes of units, e.g. it will be easier for infantry to catch archers / chase cavalry / dodge siege.
Like it will increase the viability of TKs and other infantry unique units where the primary counter is archers
Maybe they will adjust the base speed of some outlier units. It’s also a small nerf to the Celts by reducing their civ bonus as well.
I think infantry speed is super helpful if the goal is to increase infantry usage
I think it is very hard to estimate the full effect of this change. It seems to be pretty big, but I think we should just wait and see how it plays out.
I learn more towards liking it. My only concern are Eagle Warriors, as they were top tier meta already.
Apparently German streamers had the patch too and it’s still +10% for them according to what I’ve been told? Here’s the link if you wanna sort it out yourself
And yet they will still never be seen in competitive gameplay…
To me that’s not at all an increase in viability or usefulness. They’re still TechTree decorators, like half the other UUs and UTs.

Celts still have early speed buff with militia and m@a,
The eagles will be broken because could run when cavalry attack include CA
Lithuanian halbs ferraris lol
Hmmm, that stream also shows Khmer Battle Elephants with +10% movement speed in the tech tree. But the BiryArg stream shows +15% in the tech tree. I don’t think there’s any way to know now until patch day.
