Standard maps need more variety

There are many maps in this category, but I don’t understand why they removed some maps from this category. Maps like Sonora, Rockies, Painted Desert and some others are not there. What’s so special about them?

It’s for those of us who like more variety, but within the standard game.

I think they pull and add maps to keep variety within ranked (actually a good thing imo).

Personally, Cascade Range, Dunes (maybe), Grand Chaco, and a few more no TP maps would be nice in the pool.

Some maps should be no-tp maps. Like maybe 33% imo.

No, those are competitive maps. I’m referring to casual mode.

The standard map set is what is used for ranked games.

Also, Sonora is not standard due to the trade route.

No tp maps aren’t standard.

Rockies could be in there but was removed for some variety.

I do not think Horn and Dekkan are standard and should not be in the current map pool.

What’s wrong with Sonora’s trade route?

They should be…

The addition of some no tp maps would help balance the game and add variety to the map pool. Players should be able to adapt.

This made sense until ranked maps got their own category. In casual play, balance doesn’t usually matter that much.

We have Acropolis, Borneo and the Alps in the competitive maps category. We have Araucania on competitive maps, but not on standard maps.

Any map that does not require unique gameplay or maps where the enemy is not separated by water should be considered a standard map.

So its confusing but
Std maps = ranked map pool
Competitve pool = non std pool of unique maps often
I didnt make the names dont yell at me

First pass on north side 4th tp gives that player a huge advantage receiving 3 vills like 1 minute earlier than opp

Players adapting and the game not being balanced a completely separate issues.

Why are you on about competitive maps? That has nothing to do with standard/ranked maps.

You can play any map in unranked games.

Your other post makes no sense. Both competitive and standard map sets have been in the game since launch. One is used in ranked and the other is not.

I’m guessing the reason they removed no-tp maps from the pool had to do with people who didn’t want to adapt complaining (speculation).

Some civs are advantaged on different types of maps, Ports like water, Otto and Germany like TPs, Russia and India like no-tp, etc.

Therefore, players adapting indirectly improves balance.

Game is not balanced and balance is even worse on no tp maps.

Interesting. I assume this is why maps wound up typically having two trade routes meeting in the center instead of one going the full length.

So “competitive maps” encompasses both standard maps and team play maps, so this is the best option for the variety and randomness in casual matches. There are maps such as Yellow River, Sonora and many others.

Yes, it is confusing. And I’m still confused. Why are they called competitive maps, but they are not competitive?

that is a good question
That I have no answer to

The competition is between the players, so any map can be a competitive map. The name is absurd. Basically it has any map that’s not a special map. That’s the simplest way to put it.

I’d love someone to come up with a definition of a competitive map that’s not just standard maps.

Maybe it’s more akin to tournament maps, but you can have a tournament on any map really so that’s not perfect either.
